Game 1: #14 CWRU 3, Carnegie Mellon 2 (8 inn.)
With one out in the eighth inning and the score tied at two, senior infielder Isabella Russo worked a four-pitch walk to put the winning run on base. Graduate student infielder KaiLi Gross followed with a single, and senior catcher Katelyn Lamm loaded the bases with an infield hit. After an out at home, first-year outfielder Kate Coonan ended the first contest with a clean hit to center field to send home the winning run.
The game was scoreless for the first five innings with senior Spartan hurler Lexi Miskey and first-year CMU pitcher Gianna Adams locked in a pitchers' duel. Miskey worked in and out of danger throughout the contest, stranding 11 Tartans on base in the first five frames and ending each of the innings with strikeouts.
In the bottom of the sixth inning with the game still scoreless, sophomore infielder Karen Potts collected her second hit of the game to lead off the frame. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a groundout. Batting with two outs, Lamm drove Potts in with a double. Junior infielder Elizabeth Berry followed with a run-scoring single, plating a key insurance run to make the score 2-0.
The Tartans tied the score in the seventh, taking advantage of a CWRU error and executing a double steal to score a pair of runs. Case Western Reserve did not score in the bottom of the inning, pushing the contest to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Carnegie Mellon did not score, setting up the Spartan walk-off win.
Miskey (17-4) pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run in eight innings. She struck out eight batters but walked seven and gave up five hits. CMU left 13 runners on base in the game. Adams (8-7) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.
Game 2: #14 CWRU 8, Carnegie Mellon 2
The first four CWRU batters reached base to start the second game, including three consecutive doubles by Berry, Gross, and Lamm that resulted in a quick 3-0 lead. Sophomore infielder Kaelyn Zusi added to the lead with a sacrifice fly, giving the team a four-run lead in the first frame.
Carnegie Mellon cut into the deficit the next inning, scoring on a single with two outs to make the score 4-1.
The Spartans quickly regained their four-run advantage, when Potts drove in sophomore outfielder Nylah Durham with a double. Durham tripled with one out to get on base, her first triple of the season.
CMU added a run in the fourth inning, but Berry drove in a run with a groundout in the bottom of the frame, keeping the lead at four.
The Spartans added a pair of runs in their final time at-bat on an infield single by Potts, who finished the game with two hits and three runs batted in. Four members of the team had multiple hits in the game, including first-year outfielder Ashley Miller.
Senior pitcher Kylie Hosey (10-6) picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings. Junior pitcher Devanghi Misra pitched a perfect seventh inning to complete the win.
With the regular season complete, the Spartan softball team will await the announcement of the field for the 2025 NCAA Division III Softball Championship. CWRU, ranked 21st in the NCAA Power Index (NPI) which is used to determine at-large selections, will likely receive a bid to the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. The pre-taped selection show will air on ncaa.com starting at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12.
