Spartans Win Third-Straight against Emory, 13-3

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team clinched a University Athletic Association series win on Saturday with a 13-3 win over Emory University in eight innings at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.

The Spartans, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top-25 poll, improved to 17-8 overall and 6-1 in UAA play. Emory, which also received votes in the poll, dropped to 17-10 overall with a 3-4 conference record.

CWRU piled on late in the game, scoring 11 runs over its final three at-bats. The Spartans outhit Emory 14-11 in the contest with six of CWRU's hits going for extra bases.

Junior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski entered the game to start the third inning with the Spartans trailing 2-0 and went the rest of the way, scattering seven hits and four walks and limiting Emory to just one run during his six-inning relief outing. He struck out three in the effort and improved to a team-leading 4-0 for the season.

A first-inning home run gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead and Emory added a run in the top of the second to go ahead by a pair of runs. CWRU was held hitless until the bottom of the third when sophomore shortstop Nate Arterburn hit a one-out double to left field, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an error to cut the lead to 2-1. The Spartans remained behind by a run until the bottom of the fifth when senior left fielder Logan Andreyko led the frame off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and tied the game at 2-2 after crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Arterburn. However, Emory responded in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with three-consecutive one-out hits and taking a 3-2 lead on a run-scoring ground out.

The Spartans would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring six runs. With two on and one away, graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen drove in two runs with a single to turn a one-run deficit into a 4-3 lead. Camphausen later scored on a wild pitch and graduate student third baseman Zack Carinci later drove in a pair of runs with a base hit up the middle, extending CWRU's lead to 7-3. An RBI groundout by senior right fielder Nick Harms later in the inning gave CWRU a five-run lead heading into the latter third of the contest.

After junior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski sat the Emory side down in order in the seventh, the Spartans added three more runs in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Jay Smith and a two-RBI double by Arterburn. Harms led off the bottom of the eighth with his team-leading eighth home run of the season to extend his hitting streak to 22 games and junior Jasiah Harris later scored on a wild pitch to put CWRU ahead by 10 runs and force an early end to the contest.

Arterburn finished the game three-for-three at the plate with two doubles, a run scored, and three RBIs. Three other Spartan hitters had multiple-hit games with Alonso going three-for-four with two runs and a walk, Camphausen going two-for-four with two runs and an RBI, and Andreyko going two-for-three with three runs, a walk, a double, and a stolen base.

Emory starter Adam Geller suffered the loss, dropping to 2-3 on the season.

The Spartans and the Eagles are scheduled to complete their four-game series on Sunday with a single game scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. first pitch at Nobby's Ballpark.
