The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team scored six runs in a pair of contests to sweep a University Athletic Association doubleheader from Brandeis University on Friday afternoon at Marcus Field in Waltham, Massachusetts. CWRU won the first game 6-3 and followed with a 6-2 win in the second game.
The Spartans improved to 23-9 overall and 10-4 UAA, remaining in second place in the conference standings two and a half games behind WashU (12-1). The Judges fell to 8-24-1 and 3-11 in association play.
Senior catcher Katelyn Lamm went five-for-seven in the doubleheader with three runs batted in and a stolen base. Sophomore infielder Karen Potts, junior infielder Elizabeth Berry, and first-year outfielder Ashley Miller all had hits in both games.
Game 1: #17 CWRU 6, Brandeis 3
The Judges scored first in the game, securing an early lead with back-to-back bases loaded walks in the bottom of the first inning.
Brandeis maintained its advantage until the fourth inning. With two outs, Lamm singled to keep the inning alive. Senior infielder Isabella Russo followed with a home run, her fourth of the season, to tie the score at two. However, the hosts scored a run on a groundout in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead.
CWRU carried its momentum on offense into the fifth inning when the first two batters reached on a pair of walks. Potts evened the score at three with a single, and graduate student infielder KaiLi Gross followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Spartans ahead 4-3. Lamm drove in a run later in the inning with a single of her own, increasing the lead to five.
Miller led off the following frame with a double and later scored on a pinch-hit single by first-year infielder Lacey Lara.
Senior pitcher Kylie Hosey (8-6) earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on five hits with a season-high seven strikeouts in six and two-third innings. Ragini Kannan (4-6) suffered the loss for the Judges, allowing six earned runs on five hits and five walks in five innings of work.
Lamm had three hits in the game, her second time this season with a trio of back knocks and her 10th multi-hit game of the campaign. Russo drove in multiple runs for the eighth time in 2025, a team high.
Game 2: #17 CWRU 6, Brandeis 2
After Potts led off the game with a single, she scored on a double from Berry, giving the Spartans an early lead. The hosts evened the score in the bottom half without the benefit of a hit, using a hit by pitch, wild pitch, and pair of groundouts.
CWRU had a runner on third with one out in the fourth inning, but the visitors were unable to claim the lead. A two-out home run from Jordan Wallace put the Judges ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the stanza. It was the first hit allowed by senior pitcher Lexi Miskey in the game.
Potts singled to lead off the following inning, and Gross put two runners in scoring position with a double in the next at-bat. After a pitching change, Berry walked to load the bases. Lamm followed with a double, plating a pair of runs to give CWRU a 3-2 advantage. A wild pitch sent home the third run of the inning, increasing the team's lead to two, and two batters later, Miller increased the lead to four with a two-run single.
In the sixth, Miskey worked around a single and a walk, striking out the side to preserve the four-run lead, and pitched a perfect seventh to secure the sweep. She earned the win to improve to 14-3 on the season, tossing her fourth complete game with six strikeouts while allowing just two runs on two hits. Claire Warden (0-5) allowed three runs on six hits in four innings of work for Brandeis.
Potts, Gross, and Lamm each collected two hits in the contest with Lamm extending her hitting streak to nine games.
The Spartans and Judges are scheduled to conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game has been postponed from Saturday due to inclement weather in Waltham.
