No. 17 Women’s Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to No. 15 Babson

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team fell 5-2 to 15th-ranked Babson College on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta on campus of Emory University.

The Spartans dropped to 11-4 on the season, while the Beavers improved to 8-3.

Babson swept the doubles matches to take the first point, winning 7-5 at first doubles, 6-3 at second doubles, and 6-4 at third doubles.

The Beavers started singles play with a win on court two before senior Anna Kan cut into the deficit with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at fourth singles over Alessandra Cristiani. However, Babson won the battle between two nationally ranked players at first singles to regain a two-point lead. Sophomore Katie Wong won Case Western Reserve's second match of the day, defeating Mia Sorrentino 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles.

CWRU needed wins in the final two matches to secure the comeback victory, but Babson won the fifth singles match 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the win. At third singles, junior Katalina Wang forced a third set against Sarai Dorismond, but she fell by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 2-6.

CWRU will wrap up their road trip with a matchup against third-ranked Emory on Sunday with action scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.

  • The match was the first-ever meeting between CWRU and Babson
  • Three Babson players entered the match ranked nationally in singles play: Olivia Soffer (eighth), Dorismond (39th), and Matia Cristiani (50th)
  • In the latest regional rankings, senior Lily McCloskey was fifth in the Central Region in singles play, graduate student Laurel Utterback was eighth, and Wang was 20th. Babson's Soffer (third) and Matia Cristiani (ninth) were ranked in the Atlantic Region
