#24 Spartans Split Saturday Doubleheader with #21 UChicago

A pair of well-pitched games on Saturday afternoon between a pair of top-25 teams resulted in a split as the 24th-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans won the first game 4-1 before falling 5-0 to the 21st-ranked University of Chicago Maroons in the second game of the day in Chicago.

The split sets up a decisive final game of the series on Sunday, with tomorrow's winner holding a one-game lead in the league standings. The Spartans stand at 19-10 overall following the split with the Maroons moving to 21-8 for the campaign. The two teams are tied atop the University Athletic Association standings with each holding an 8-3 conference record.

Game 1 - #24 CWRU 4, #21 Chicago 1

CWRU first-year southpaw Charlie Griffith and sophomore righty Zach Barnes combined to hold the Maroons to a single run on eight hits in a 4-1 win in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The first three batters of the game reached for the Spartans, including sophomore designated hitter Tyler Stillson, who drove in the first run of the game with a base hit. With two outs in the inning, graduate student Dane Camphausen scored Stillson with a double, and senior right fielder Jay Smith plated Camphausen with a single, extending the Spartans' lead to 3-0 at the end of half an inning.

Griffith made the 3-0 lead stand up through his five and a third innings of work, leaving the game with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth. Barnes was able to pitch out of the jam, getting a strikeout and a ground out to strand the bases loaded and hold the Maroons scoreless.

The Maroons loaded the bases with one out again in the seventh but Barnes got another strikeout and a groundout to end the threat again without a run crossing the plate. After Barnes retired the side in order in the eighth, the Spartans added a run in the top of the ninth on a run-scoring double by graduate student third baseman Zack Carinci to extend their lead to 4-0. Chicago scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Barnes was able to close out the game for his second save of the campaign.

Griffith, who allowed just three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in the game, improved to 3-1 with the win. Chicago starter Hayden Leiderman suffered the loss, falling to 5-2 for the season.

Stillson finished the game two-for-three with a run, an RBI, and a walk, while Camphausen and Carinci each went one-for-four with an RBI double in the contest.

Game 2 - #21 Chicago 5, CWRU 0

The Spartans struggled to get their offense going in the second game of the day, falling 5-0 to the Maroons in the contest.

Chicago scored a run in the top of the first against CWRU righty Eric Colgrove to take the lead and then added a second run off Colgrove in the fifth, in what was otherwise the strongest start of the first-year's season. Colgrove finished the game with just the two runs allowed on five hits over six innings while striking out a career-high seven batters, despite taking the loss in the contest to drop to 1-1.

The Maroons added on three runs in the eighth inning off the Spartan bullpen to pull away late.

CWRU finished the game with five hits, including two in four at-bats with a double from Camphausen. However, the Chicago pitching staff kept the Spartans offense at bay throughout the game, as no CWRU player made it past second base during the contest.

Chicago starter Russell Kwinter earned the win after pitching the first seven innings of the shutout, improving to 5-0 on the season.

The Spartans and the Maroons will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a single game at 12:00 p.m. ET in Chicago.
