No. 17 Women’s Tennis Starts Atlanta Trip with 6-1 Win

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team opened its three-day weekend trip to Atlanta with a 6-1 win over Berry College on Friday afternoon on the campus of Emory University.

The Spartans improved to 11-3 on the season with their third consecutive win, while the Vikings dropped to 12-6 overall.

Graduate student Laurel Utterback and junior Katalina Wang did not drop a point at second doubles to open the match, defeating Sophie Gibbs and Olivia Walton, 6-0. CWRU clinched the doubles point when first-year Maya Brink and sophomore Katie Wong bested Lacey Craig and Sakura Manning 6-2 at third doubles. The Spartans completed the sweep with a 7-5 win by seniors Lily McCloskey and Anna Kan at first doubles over Lauren Masteller and Sara Mejia.

Wong picked up a point at fifth singles with a win by retirement, and Wang followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at second singles over Mejia. Junior Asha Shukla clinched the match for CWRU with a 6-3, 6-3 takedown of Walton at fourth singles. Sophomore Prachi Shah added a point by defeating Manning 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles, and Kan prevailed in three sets, 6-2, 3-7 (3-7), 10-4, over Gibbs at third singles.

Berry's lone point came at first singles.

The Spartans will next turn their attention to a matchup against 15th-ranked Babson on Saturday at 11 a.m.
