The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match by sweep, defeating 26th-ranked Grinnell College 7-0 on Sunday morning at the DePauw Tennis Center in Greencastle, Indiana.
The Spartans improved to 5-0 to start the season, while the Pioneers dropped to 10-2.
Juniors Ellior Rose and Asha Shukla started scoring for CWRU with a 6-0 third doubles win over Anika Sheth and Utsah Kalra. Senior Lily McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang secured the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph at first doubles over Erin Jarvis and Lily Perrin. At second doubles, senior Anna Kan and junior Elsa Syed completed the sweep by defeating Isabel Voinescu and Pari Chavan 6-3.
Wang gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead by defeating Jarvis 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Sophomore Katie Wong followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Voinescu at sixth singles, and Kan clinched the match win by taking down Perrin 6-0, 6-1 at third singles.
McCloskey, ranked 38th in Division III in singles play, bested Chavan 6-2, 6-1 at first singles, and Syed added a 6-3, 6-0 fifth singles victory over Sheth. At fourth singles, Shukla prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-6 over Kalra.
The Spartans will take 19 days off from intercollegiate competition before resuming their season with a trip to Newport News, Virginia, in late March. CWRU will face 17th-ranked Christopher Newport on Friday, March 21 at 1 p.m. The following day, the team will face 34th-ranked NYU, before a test against seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins on Sunday, March 23.
