The 15th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team won its sixth consecutive match to start the season, defeating 17th-ranked Christopher Newport University 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Eyre Courts in Newport News, Virginia.
The Spartans improved to 6-0 this season, while the Captains dropped to 4-6.
Senior Anna Kan and junior Elsa Syed won the second doubles match for the Spartans defeating Kendal Chang and Samantha Robertson, 6-4. CWRU clinched the doubles point when juniors Asha Shukla and Ellior Rose bested Erin Gross and Eva Taylor 6-3 at third doubles. At first doubles, senior Lily McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang fell in tiebreakers to the 15th-ranked duo of Raine Weis and Kylie Schaefer, dropping the match 6-7 (6-8).
Wang started singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chang at second singles before CNU secured its first point of the match at third singles. McCloskey, ranked 38th nationally, followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Schaefer at first singles to put the Spartans a point away from clinching the match. Sophomore Katie Wong secure the win with a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Gross at sixth singles.
After the Captains grabbed a point at fourth singles, Syed finished the dual with a 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (7-2) win over Lindsey Bergelin at fifth singles.
CWRU will remain in Virginia, playing 30th-ranked New York University on Saturday at 10 a.m. on the campus of CNU.
