Men’s Basketball Falls to #11 Emory on Sunday Afternoon

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered a 93-54 loss to the 11th-ranked Emory University Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-14 on the season, including a 2-7 record in the University Athletic Association, while Emory won its fourth-straight game to improve to 17-3 overall and 7-2 in conference games.

CWRU withstood an early push from the Eagles, cutting a 10-point deficit with 14:32 left to just one point with a 9-0 run and trailed 16-15 with 12:45 to play in the half. However, the turning point in the game came with eight minutes left to play in the period. With the Spartans trailing by just six, 23-17, Emory went on a 21-0 run to increase their lead to 44-17 with under two minutes left before taking a 25-point lead into the break. CWRU would not get any closer over the final 20 minutes of the game, as Emory was able to pull away further for the big win.

First-year Matthew Ellis led all Spartan players on Sunday with 13 points, making a career-high six baskets on 11 attempts. Senior forward Umar Rashid paced the squad with eight rebounds and senior guard Sam Trunley added a team-best four assists and two steals in the game. Both Rashid and Trunley finished the game with eight points.

The Spartans will continue their four-game home stand next weekend, hosting 10th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Friday night and the 24th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon. CWRU will also celebrate 'Senior Night' for its graduating men's basketball players on Friday night against WashU with a special ceremony set to take place before the start of the game.
