CWRU Celebrates ‘Senior Night’ but Falls to #19 WashU

Case Western Reserve University senior guard Sam Trunley and senior forward Umar Rashid combined for 43 points on 'Senior Night' at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, but it was not enough for the Spartans who fell to the 19th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) Bears 86-68 on Friday.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in University Athletic Association games, while the Bears ended a three-game losing streak, improving to 16-5 overall with a 6-4 conference mark.

Trunley led all scorers in the game on Friday night with 25 points, making six-of-21 shots overall, four-of-13 from long range, and nine-of-nine from the free throw line. He added five rebounds and a steal. Rashid added 18 points on seven-of-19 shooting overall and four-of-12 from behind the three-point line while collecting 10 rebounds and a pair of steals.

Trunley paced the Spartans with 15 points in the first half, helping CWRU head into the break down just a point, 32-31. The Spartans led by a point, 22-21, with 6:53 left in the first half, but the Bears responded with a 7-0 run to take a six-point lead, their largest of the period. CWRU kept WashU within striking distance though, and a three by junior guard Anand Dharmarajan with under a minute left pulled the Spartans back within a point heading into the break.

Senior forward Andrew Fox connected on a jumper to start the second half and give CWRU the lead. However, the Bears followed with a 9-2 run to regain the lead and continued to add to their advantage through the second frame. After the Spartans held WashU to just three three-pointers on 16 attempts in the first period, the Bears found their distance shot in the second frame, making nine three-pointers on 19 shots, helping them pull away from the Spartans for the win over the final 20 minutes of the game.

The Spartans also celebrated 'Senior Day' on Friday night, recognizing the five graduating players - graduate student forward Andy Barba, graduate student guard Christian McDaniel, Rashid, graduate student guard Nicholas Schiavello, and Trunley - during a special ceremony before to the start of the game.

The Spartans will play their final home game of the 2024-25 season on Sunday when the team hosts the 24th-ranked University of Chicago at 2:00 p.m. in Horsburgh Gymnasium.

  • Rashid's 18 points on Friday give him 344 for the season, marking a new career high. He now has 963 points for his career.

  • Rashid's double-double was his ninth of the season and his fourth in UAA games this year.

  • CWRU fell to 9-55 all-time against WashU following the loss on Friday. The win completed a sweep of the season series for the Bears against the Spartans.
