Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CWRU Falls Late in Thriller against Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team overcame a 10-point deficit with under four minutes to play and took a late lead against the University of Rochester on Friday night, but ultimately could not hold onto the lead in an 89-71 loss to the Yellowjackets to open Throwback Weekend at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The Spartans fell to 6-13 overall with a 2-6 University Athletic Association record while Rochester improved to 7-12 overall with a 1-7 conference mark.

Seniors Sam Trunley and Umar Rashid led the Spartans with 24 and 23 points, respectively. Trunley made seven of his 16 shot attempts from the floor and connected on two-of-four from behind the three-point line while adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Rashid shot nine-of-18 from the floor and four-of-eight from long range, while collecting 11 rebounds, two assists, and three blocks.

Two other Spartans finished in double figures on Friday. Graduate student forward Andy Barba finished the game with 14 points while matching his career-highs with three assists and two steals. Junior guard Anand Dharmarajan, who made the first start of his career, connected on four three-point shots and finished with a career-best 12 points.

Rashid led the Spartans with 13 points and Trunley added nine during a closely-contested first half, but CWRU trailed by five points, 46-41, by the end of the opening frame. Rashid connected on three three-pointers over the first seven minutes of the game with his final one giving CWRU a period-high 16-11 lead with 13:07 to play. The game was tied 38-38 with 1:44 left in the period before Rochester launched on an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the half with 12 seconds remaining. A three by Trunley just before the buzzer cut the Yellowjackets lead to 46-41 heading into the break.

CWRU finished the first half shooting 44.1% overall (15-34) and 45.0% from three-point range (9-20).

The Spartans managed to tie the game at 48-48 with 18:16 left in the game on a layup by Trunley and were ahead 63-60 on a three by Barba with 12:42 left. However, the Yellowjackets responded with a 12-0 run that gave them a 72-63 lead with 8:28 left.

Rochester led by as many as 10 points, going ahead 81-71 with 3:56 left before the Spartans began a 16-5 run that saw them take a one-point lead with 37 seconds left in the game. A basket by Barba started the run, and Trunley followed with a layup and a steal that cut the Yellowjackets' lead to just six points with 2:22 left. CWRU whittled the Rochester lead down to two points after a three from Rashid with 1:09 to play and after the Yellowjackets made a pair of free throws on the other end of the court, a three by first-year guard Matthew Ellis made it a one-point game with 50 seconds left. Rochester then turned the ball over on their next possession, as Barba stole the ball and was fouled while attempting a layup, hitting both of the resulting free throws with 37 seconds left to give the Spartans their first lead in nearly 12 minutes.

Rochester missed a shot to tie the game its next time down the court, but Bennett Kwiecinski was able to corral an offensive rebound and was fouled on a putback attempt. He went on to make both free throws to give the Yellowjackets the lead back with six seconds to play. CWRU then turned the ball over on the next possession and was forced to foul with just over two seconds remaining. Rochester's Tomiwa Adetosoye connected on the first free throw but missed the second, and despite getting the rebound, CWRU did not have enough time to get off a reasonable shot to tie the game, as the Yellowjackets held on for the lead.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.1% overall (30-68) and 42.1% from behind the three-point line (16-38) while Rochester ended the contest with a 50.0% field goal percentage (33-66), including a 43.5% tally from long range (10-23). CWRU forced 11 turnovers in the game and finished with an 18-12 edge in points off turnovers.

The Spartans will continue their four-game home stand on Sunday when the team plays host to 11th-ranked Emory University at Horsburgh Gymnasium with the tip off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. As a part of Throwback Weekend, CWRU will don its Case Institute of Technology Rough Riders uniforms for the game.
