The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team swept a pair of games to open its 2025 season, defeating DePauw University 10-2 in five innings and upsetting top-ranked East Texas Baptist University 6-5 on Friday at the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic held at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Georgia.
The Spartans start the season with a record of 2-0. DePauw dropped to 1-1, while ETBU fell to 9-1. The loss was the first in the regular season for the Tigers since April 5, 2024, breaking a streak of 21 consecutive victories.
#7 CWRU 6, #1 ETBU 5
Down 4-2 entering the fifth inning, CWRU rallied for three runs to take a lead it would not relinquish. With one out, sophomore outfielder Nylah Durham singled. She reached third with two outs and scored on a double by sophomore infielder Karen Potts. Senior infielder Isabella Russo came to the plate and slugged a two-run homer to right field to plate the go-ahead run.
Senior hurler Kylie Hosey worked around a two-out hit in the bottom half of the frame and retired the side in order in the sixth inning. Senior infielder KaiLi Gross added a key insurance run in the final stanza with her first homer of the season.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartan defense threw out a runner at home, preventing the Tigers from cutting into the deficit. ETBU stayed alive with a run-scoring double, but Hosey induced a game-ending groundout to secure the upset. She earned the save in the circle, her first of the season, by pitching three innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Senior Lexi Miskey (1-0) picked up her first win with four innings of four-run pitching.
Gross finished the game with two hits, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and two runs batted in. Russo drove in three runs on two hits, and junior infielder Elizabeth Berry also had a two-hit game.
The Spartans scored first in the contest with Russo driving in Gross on a one-out single in the opening inning. Gross doubled the lead in the third inning, plating Durham with a single of her own. The Tigers cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the third and scored three times in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
#7 CWRU 10, DePauw 2 (5 inn.)
CWRU scored six times in the fourth inning of the opening game, ending the contest after just five innings by run rule.
The Spartans started scoring in the first inning when senior catcher Katelyn Lamm drove home Potts. The Tigers quickly responded with a two-run homer, but that was all their offense could muster for the remainder of the contest.
Sophomore outfielder Alaina Steffes hit her first career home run in the bottom of the second frame, driving home two runs to reclaim the lead. Steffes added a run in the next inning, making the score 4-2 with a single that sent Berry home. She finished the game with three hits in three at-bats, matching a career-high, and drove in a career-best four runs.
Gross started the scoring in the fourth, sending home first-year outfielder Kate Coonan with a double. Russo plated a pair with a single and later scored on a hit by Berry. Sophomore infielder Kaelyn Zusi added a run with a sacrifice fly, and Steffes followed with a two-out single to increase the lead to eight.
Junior pitcher Devanghi Misra worked around a one-out walk to pitch a scoreless fifth inning, securing the win. Hosey (1-0) started the game in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits in four innings with four strikeouts. Lamm had a career-high three hits in the contest, and eight Spartans combined for 12 hits overall.
Case Western Reserve will continue play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday with matchups against second-ranked Linfield and 10th-ranked Trine. CWRU will face the Wildcats at 3 p.m. and the Thunder at 5:30 p.m.
