Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rashid Reaches 1,000 Career Points in CWRU Loss to #2 NYU

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Umar Rashid became the 22nd player in program history to score 1,000 career points on Sunday during the team's 83-55 loss to second-ranked New York University in New York City on Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 8-16 overall with a 4-9 University Athletic Association record while NYU improved to 23-1 overall with a 12-1 conference mark.

Rashid, who entered the game with 998 points for his career, matched the mark with a layup on the first possession of the second half. He became the second CWRU player to reach the milestone this season, along with teammate and senior guard Sam Trunley.

Trunley was the only Spartan to score in double figures on Saturday, finishing the game with 21 points on a five-of-16 shooting effort overall, including four-of-12 from long range, and making all seven of his free throw attempts, He added five rebounds in the game and led all CWRU players with five assists and two steals. Rashid paced the team with nine rebounds in the game.

The Spartans never led in Sunday's game, as NYU set the tone early with a 14-2 run over the first five minutes. CWRU answered with a 6-0 run, trimming the Violets' lead to six on a layup by junior forward Aaron Rucker with 13:20 to go in the first, but NYU quickly pushed its lead back to double digits and led by as many as 23 points in the first half before taking a 47-26 lead into halftime.

A 14-4 run midway through the second half, capped off by a three from Trunley with 8:41 to play in the game, cut the NYU lead down to 16 points, but that would be as close as the Spartans could get in the second frame, as the outcome of the game was not in question over the final 20 minutes en route to the Violets' win.

The Spartans will wrap up their 2024-25 campaign next Saturday, March 1 against Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Spartan Notes

  • Trunley's 21-point effort on Sunday gives him 536 for the season as he passed Ed Saxon (529 points during the 1989-90 season) for the second-most in a campaign in program history. He is nine points away from matching Anthony Mazzeo's program record of 545 points set last year over 28 games.

  • CWRU finished the game shooting 33.9% overall and 16.7% from three-point range. The Spartans also made 12-of-15 free throw attempts for an 80.0% mark from the charity stripe on Sunday.

  • The Spartans, who were swept in the season series by the Violets, fell to 24-41 all-time against NYU.
