Camphausen Clubs Program-Record Four Home Runs, No. 14 Baseball Splits on Sunday

Graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen set a program record with four home runs in a single game as the 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team split a pair of games at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, on Sunday to conclude the Crossroads Crossover Series.

The Spartans, who lost to DePauw University 8-6 and defeated Heidelberg University 13-3, moved to 1-2 on the season. The Tigers improved to 1-0, while the Student Princes dropped to 0-1.

#14 CWRU 13, Heidelberg 3

Camphausen hit a CWRU single-game record four home runs, including a grand slam, in five-at bats in the second game of the day to lead the Spartans to their first victory of the season. He drove in eight runs, matching Rocco Maue's program record from 2018, and added a single for a program-record 17 total bases.

In the first inning, Camphausen was held to a single, but he drove in the first run of the contest, bringing in graduate student Jack Anderson from second. He came to the plate with one out in the third inning, hitting his first home run of the contest to increase the team's lead to three. Camphausen slugged another solo shot with one out in the fifth inning, led off the eighth inning with a home run, and capped his day with a two-out grand slam later in the frame. It marked the first multi-homer inning for any Spartan since at least the 2004 season.

In the first inning, sophomore third baseman Tyler Stillson hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, to double the Spartan advantage. After Camphausen's home run in the third inning, senior outfielder Nick Harms drove in a run with a groundout to make the score 4-0.

Junior right-handed starting pitcher Archer Stankowski (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine Student Princes.

Heidelberg scored its first run of the contest in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly. The Student Princes plated a run in the eighth inning on a double with no one out and scored a run on an error with one out to cut the deficit to just two. With runners on first and second, Anderson strode from center field to the mound, immediately striking out a batter before hitting a batsman and loading the bases. He quelled the threat with a strikeout, preserving the lead, and he retired the side in order in the ninth inning to secure his first save of 2025.

In between Anderson's appearances on the mound, the Spartans struck for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth. Following Camphausen's third home run, senior outfielder Jay Smith doubled home a run to make the score 7-3. Junior catcher Sean Donahue plated a run with a double, and first-year infielder Calvin Gelle singled home Donahue to increase the lead to six. Back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases for Camphausen, who set the program record for home runs with the four-run shot.

First-year pitcher Oliver Miller made his Spartan debut in relief in the seventh inning, retiring all three batters he faced in the frame.

DePauw 8, #14 CWRU 6

A ninth-inning rally came up two runs short for the Spartans in the first game of the day. Trailing 8-3 heading into the bottom of the final frame, the first three hitters reached base to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. Smith drove in a run with a single, and sophomore infielder Nate Arterburn plated two more runs to cut the deficit to just two. With one out and runners on first and second, the Tigers brought in their closer, who induced a double play to end the threat.

DePauw scored once in the eighth and three times in the ninth to increase its lead from 4-3 to 8-3. To start the game, the Tigers scored three times in the first inning to take an early lead.

CWRU broke through in the sixth inning with Camphausen sending Arterburn home with a single and Stillson driving in Anderson with a groundout.

The Tigers scored on a wild pitch the following frame, but graduate student infielder Franco Alonso slugged his first homer of the season in the bottom half to keep the deficit at one. He had a two-hit game for CWRU as eight members of the Spartan starting nine recorded a hit in the contest.

Senior southpaw Kyle Gearding (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans, allowing three unearned runs in four innings with three strikeouts. First-year lefty Charlie Griffith impressed in his Case Western Reserve debut on the mound, allowing just one run on one hit in three innings with five strikeouts. For DePauw, Pearse Riendeau (1-0) earned the win with six innings of two-run ball.

The Spartans will next travel to Louisville, Kentucky, for the Derby City Classic on March 1 and 2. CWRU will face Millikin on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before a game against host Spalding at 6 p.m. The next day, the Spartans will take on Ohio Northern at 11 a.m.
