The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball could not overcome Brandeis University's hot perimeter shooting on Friday night, falling 58-43 to the Judges in Waltham, Massachusetts.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 7-16 overall and 2-10 in University Athletic Association games, while the Judges improved to 12-11 with a 5-7 league record.
Senior guard Nyah Moore led all CWRU players with 11 points on a three-of-six shooting effort from the floor, including two-of-five from long range. Sophomore guard Mya Hartjes added 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while senior forward Evie Miller added nine points, four rebounds, and three blocks.
The Spartans did not have an answer for the Judges long-range shooting in the game. After Brandeis missed their first four three-point attempts of the contest, it went on to make eight of its next 14 shots from behind the arc.
The Spartans turned a pair of early Brandeis turnovers into threes from Moore and Hartjes and scored the first eight points of the game. The Judges finally got on the board at the 5:33 mark of the first quarter and ended the period with a 10-2 run, as the first 10 minutes ended in a 10-10 tie. Brandeis' run continued into the second quarter, as the Judges scored the first 11 points of the period and led by as many as 12, before three free throws by first-year guard Mila Rossini pulled the Spartans back to within nine, 27-18, heading into halftime.
CWRU had a response in the third period. After the Judges scored the first two points of the stanza to go back ahead by 11, CWRU launched on a 12-0 run, taking a 30-29 lead on a layup by Miller with 6:01 left in the period. Brandeis followed with five-straight points to regain the lead and held it for the rest of the quarter with a buzzer-beating three by Abby Kennedy putting the Judges ahead 37-32 heading into the final frame. Brandeis continued to push its advantage in the fourth, going ahead 47-32 with 6:49 to play in the game and maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the game en route to the win.
CWRU will continue its road trip on Sunday, facing top-ranked New York University at noon in New York City.
Spartan Notes
-
Moore's 11 points were one shy of her career-high of 12, set earlier this season against John Carroll. It was just the second time in her career, along with the John Carroll contest this year, that she has been the team's leading scorer.
-
Miller's three blocks give her 57 for the season, moving her past former Spartan Emily Mueller (2012-13) for the second-most in a single season in program history. Her total now stands behind only Elaine Contronakis' 67 blocks during the 1987-88 season in program history. Her 122 career blocks are the fourth-most in program history.
-
Sophomore forward Maura Schorr finished with a career-high five steals and three assists.
