The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team began the spring portion of its season with a 7-0 sweep of 35th-ranked Hope College on Saturday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio.
The Spartans began the season with a record of 1-0, while the Flying Dutch fell to 2-1.
CWRU earned the doubles point with wins at first and third doubles. Senior Lily McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang defeated Miyako Coffey and Mallory Matthews 6-1 at first doubles, and graduate student Laurel Utterback and junior Elsa Syed won 6-2 over Makenna Crandell and Kaitlyn Stievater at third doubles. To complete the sweep, senior Anna Kan and junior Asha Shukla prevailed 6-3 over Madison Wei and Phoebe Walker at second doubles.
Wang opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Stievater at third singles, and her win was quickly followed by a 6-0, 6-2 triumph by Shukla over Walker at fifth singles. Sophomore Katie Wong defeated Hope Rhoades 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles to secure the fourth point and the match victory. McCloskey added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Coffey at first singles, Kan bested Matthews 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles, and Utterback completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wei at second singles.
The Spartans will host Allegheny College tomorrow at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club with first serve expected at 1 p.m.
