Plachta’s Career-High 24 Points Leads Spartans to Season-Opening 81-33 Win over Rose-Hulman

Case Western Reserve University senior guard/forward Emily Plachta scored a career-high 24 points and junior guard Jordyn Call added 14 points as the Spartans led wire-to-wire in an 81-33 win over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the opening game of the MSOE STEM Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night in Milwaukee.

CWRU, which improved to 1-0 on the season, will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for the tournament championship on Saturday, while Rose-Hulman, which fell to 0-1, will take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the consolation game.

Stats and Standouts


  • Plachta finished the game shooting seven-of-12 from the floor and made four of eight three-point attempts. She added seven rebounds, two steals, an assist, and a block. Her 24 points surpassed her previous career-high of 22 that she set last season in a win at WashU on January 17.

  • Call shot five-of-nine from the floor and three-of-seven from long range with four rebounds, a block, and two steals.

  • Junior guard Mya Hartjes added seven points, a team-high six assists and four steals, and three rebounds in the game.

  • Junior forward Biz Watson came off the bench to collect a team-high eight rebounds and score four points.

  • CWRU finished the game shooting 43.3% (29-67) from the floor and 39.4% (13-33) from long range.

  • The Spartans' defense held Rose-Hulman to just 22.6% shooting overall and 7.1% from behind the three-point line. CWRU forced 22 turnovers in the game and finished with a 28-8 edge in points off turnovers.

First Period


  • Plachta and Call combined for 16 points in the first quarter, as the two made five-of-six shots and four-of-five three-point attempts. Plachta finished the frame with nine points, with Call pouring in seven.

  • The Spartans opened the game on a 10-0 run, capped off by a three from Plachta with 5:28 on the clock.

  • Rose-Hulman did not score over the first 7:13 of the game before hitting a two, but Call answered with a three.

  • Plachta hit a free throw in the closing seconds of the period to give the Spartans their largest lead of the period, 18-2, heading into the second frame.

Second Period


  • CWRU continued to add to its lead in the second quarter, shooting a blistering 64.7% from the floor during the period, including 50.0% from three-point range.

  • A three by Plachta with 8:54 remaining in the period put the team ahead 22-4.

  • Sophomore Taylor Angielski made her second three of the period with 4:14 left to push the Spartans' advantage to 28 points, 39-11.

  • A layup from Hartjes as time expired gave CWRU a 29-point lead heading into halftime, 48-19, its largest lead of the half.

Third Period


  • Plachta scored eight of the first 10 Spartan points in the third, including a three-pointer with 4:01 left in the period that put CWRU in front 58-21.

  • A jumper by first-year guard Christen Banks with 12 seconds left in the period allowed CWRU to carry a 62-57 advantage into the final period.

Fourth Period


  • Eight straight points from CWRU to start the fourth helped the team take a 70-27 lead with 8:16 to go in the game.

  • Sophomore forward Lauren Ludwig hit a layup with 1:15 left to cap off the scoring for the day, as CWRU ended the game with its largest lead of the day, 48 points.

Spartan Notes


  • The 33 points allowed by the Spartans on Friday were the fewest yielded by the team since a 72-29 win over Kenyon on December 1, 2023. The 48-point win was the team's largest margin of victory since a 108-52 win against Pitt.-Greensburg on December 19, 2024.

  • Friday's matchup was just the second all-time between the Spartans and the Fightin' Engineers. Rose-Hulman won the previous matchup 68-60 during the 2015-16 campaign. 

  • CWRU is 26-25 all-time in season-opening games and has won three of its last four season openers.

  • Hartjes' seven points on Friday put her just six away from 500 for her career.

  • All 14 players on the CWRU roster played on Friday, including four first-year players - Abby Sirois, Ava Jordan, Banks, and Clara Swanson - who made their collegiate debuts. Eleven of the 14 players scored in the game.
