CWRU Football Falls to Geneva on Senior Day

The Case Western Reserve University football team closed out its 2025 schedule on Saturday, celebrating its 26 graduating players with a 'Senior Day' ceremony prior to the start of the game. Unfortunately, the celebration was cut short by the results on the field, as the Spartans fell to Geneva College 43-16 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

The Spartans ended their campaign with a 4-5-1 record, including a 4-4 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Golden Tornadoes closed out their season with a 6-4 overall mark and a 6-2 PAC ledger.

Stats and Standouts


  • The Spartans finished the game with 381 total yards of offense, including 282 passing yards and 99 rushing yards. Defensively, CWRU yielded 392 total yards, including 213 passing yards and 179 rushing yards.

  • Sophomore wide receiver Will Stack caught a career-high eight passes for 65 yards with a touchdown.

  • Sophomore linebacker Tim Gonakis led the team with 11 tackles (four solo), including 0.5 tackles for a loss.

  • Senior defensive lineman Joseph Swarm tallied six tackles, including 1.5 for loss and one sack, and finished the season with a team-leading 11 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

  • Junior quarterback Pierce Olsen came off the bench to complete 15-of-29 pass attempts and lead the team with 35 rushing yards.

First Quarter


  • Geneva got on the board first, scoring on a 12-yard run by David Reid with 3:25 to play in the first.

  • CWRU responded on its ensuing drive, as sophomore quarterback Sam DeTillio completed a 50-yard pass to graduate student Brian Caldwell Jr. on second-and-three, and then followed that with a 10-yard touchdown strike to Stack in the endzone, knotting the score at 7-7 with 3:24 to go in the quarter.

Second Quarter


  • Geneva scored the first 16 points of the second quarter, grabbing a 23-7 lead with 1:21 left in the half.

  • Senior defensive back Mason Mehl blocked an extra point attempt on the Golden Tornadoes' final score of the half, and sophomore defensive back Jake Kavcic returned it 90 yards to add two points to the CWRU score and make it 23-9 heading into halftime.

Third Quarter


  • A 68-yard pass from Geneva quarterback Caleb Romano to Luke Cumbacher extended the team's lead to 30-9 with 9:16 on the clock.

  • DeTillio capped off a 10-play, 67-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to get CWRU within two scores, 30-16, by the end of the third.

Fourth Quarter


  • Geneva registered a pair of touchdowns in the fourth, scoring on a 16-yard pass from Romano to Dayne Johnke and a 98-yard interception return from Demarean Frazier.

Spartan Notes


  • Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the Spartans recognized the team's 26 graduating players who appeared in the final contest of their collegiate careers with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony. The group finished with a record of 23-16-1 over the last four years, including a 22-14 mark in PAC games.

  • The Spartans have now gone 114 consecutive games without being shut out, dating back to the 2013 season.

  • DeTillio finished the campaign with 15 passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns, leading the team in both.

  • The Spartans dropped to 12-2 all-time against Geneva with the loss.

  • Saturday's game was the final contest in the 33-year career of Geneva head coach Geno DeMarco.
