In a battle of top five teams, the fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team lost 1-0 on a late goal to second-ranked Emory University on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans fell to 13-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in University Athletic Association play, while the Eagles improved to 15-1-1 in 2025 and 4-1-1 in conference contests.
Stats and Standouts
- CWRU held a 13-11 edge in shots, 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, and kicked seven corner kicks compared to five for Emory
- Senior Alexis Sassower had a team-high four shots with senior Ceci Dapino adding three, all of which were on goal
- Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Palaian saved five shots in 90 minutes
- Senior Mackenzie Mueller, junior Kat Tsarouhas, and first-year Mia Modrovich played the entire contest for the Spartans
First Half
- The Spartans attacked early, getting a pair of shots and two corner kicks in the first five minutes of play
- Sassower's attempt in the 22nd minute was saved, followed by a save on a shot by first-year Izzy Probst in the 30th minute of play
- Palaian made her first save less than 30 seconds later, stopping a counterattack and forcing a corner kick
- Neither team was able to convert its set pieces, leading to a 0-0 scoreline at the break
Second Half
- Dapino had an attempt saved five minutes into the second period, but the Eagles controlled possession over the ensuing 10 minutes
- Emory had four shots in the interval and a pair of corner kicks, but two saves by Palaian kept the game scoreless
- The Spartans returned the favor, earning a corner kick in the 70th minute and nearly scoring on a shot by Sassower
- A pair of shots by Dapino were saved in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, and Case Western Reserve was unable to convert a corner kick a few minutes later
- Emory, however, scored, breaking the tie in the 81st minute on a long shot by Emory Bozzuti
- Junior Kaylee Bannack had the team's last chance to score in the 85th minute, but her attempt was saved

- The Spartans were shutout for the first time this season, breaking a streak of 20 consecutive regular season games with a goal
- CWRU dropped to 3-2-2 against teams ranked in the top 25 at the time of the matchup
