Tom Summers was a four-year member of the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team and graduated in 2012 with his degree in finance. Summers earned All-University Athletic Association honors following the 2009-10 and 2011-12 campaigns. His 722 career rebounds rank second all-time in program history, and his 1,021 points rank 21st in the team's record book.
What is your current occupation?
I am a litigation attorney, focusing primarily on personal injury defense. My work involves representing clients in complex civil cases. I also mentor junior attorneys and collaborate with clients to achieve practical, effective outcomes.
How did your athletic and academic experience at CWRU help prepare you for post-graduate life?
Being part of the CWRU basketball program was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. Balancing academics and athletics taught me how to work hard, stay organized, and persevere through challenges. The lessons my coaches and teammates taught me about preparation, teamwork, and resilience continue to shape how I approach things today.
What is your favorite and/or most memorable moment as a CWRU athlete?
My favorite and most memorable moment as a CWRU athlete was our international trip to Brazil. While we played a few games there, the experience was really about bonding and connecting as a team. The friendships and memories we made on that trip are something we still talk about to this day.
What advice would you give to a current CWRU student-athlete?
Take the time to build personal connections. The UAA is full of talented people who go on to do incredible things in their careers. You never know when those relationships might open a door or provide support down the road.
Why is it important to stay engaged with CWRU athletics after graduation?
Staying engaged with CWRU athletics provides a chance to give back and help future student-athletes succeed.
