Spartans Blank No. 5 Brandeis, Earn Road Draw

Senior Bradley Winter set the single-season program record for shutouts

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team fought fifth-ranked Brandeis University to a scoreless draw on Gordon Field in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Friday evening, as senior Bradley Winter recorded his school-record-setting ninth shutout of the 2025 campaign.

The Spartans moved to 6-3-5 overall and 0-2-2 in University Athletic Association play, while the Judges moved to 9-1-4 in 2025 and 1-1-2 in UAA contests.

Stats and Standouts

  • Winter played all 90 minutes for the Spartans for the 14th time this season, saving four shots
  • He lowered his goals against average to 0.43 and improved his save percentage to .829
  • Sophomore Ashton McNally had a team-high four shots, including one on target, with senior Camden Larson adding three attempts at goal (two on target)
  • CWRU had a 16-13 advantage in shots and 5-4 edge in shots on goal
  • The Spartans also had six corner kicks in the game

First Half

  • Case Western Reserve had an early chance on a free kick near the box, but a shot by junior Ohta Kamiya was saved in the sixth minute of play
  • The Judges put a shot on frame in the 10th minute that was saved by Winter
  • Winter secured another save in the 23rd minute, diving to his right to keep Brandeis from scoring
  • More than 10 minutes later, sophomore Amir Awais attempted a shot close to the net, but he missed wide
  • The teams headed into the locker rooms scoreless with just one shot in the remainder of the half

Second Half

  • Both teams had corner kicks within the first five minutes of the second period, but neither were able to convert the set pieces
  • A shot by the Judges hit the right post in the 56th minute, and Winter saved the ensuing shot off the rebound
  • McNally sent a header wide a few minutes later, following a CWRU corner kick
  • Junior Cameron Thayer had a second header in the 63rd minute which necessitated a save by the Brandeis goalkeeper
  • In the 68th minute, McNally sent a free kick into the box, and two Spartans attempted shots that were both blocked. After a corner kick, a Spartan attempt went wide
  • Brandeis earned a corner kick with under 15 minutes left after a long shot
  • Winter jumped into the cross and caught the ball to keep the hosts from even attempting a shot
  • In the 80th minute, a shot by senior Phillip Washington went wide, but it did earn the team a corner kick
  • Five minutes later, a Brandeis corner kick resulted in an unsuccessful shot attempt, and Winter saved a shot 50 seconds later to keep the game scoreless
  • McNally nearly broke the deadlock with under three minutes left, sending a shot into the top of the net that required a tip save
  • A last-second shot by Larson was also saved, securing the scoreless tie

Spartan Notes

  • The Spartans moved to 9-16-6 against Brandeis, earning wins in three of the last five matchups
  • In the NCAA Power Index released on October 20, CWRU ranked 72nd in Division III with an NPI of 53.843. Brandeis had the seventh-highest rating of 58.535. Three UAA teams ranked in the top 10 (Emory, WashU) and a fourth (Chicago) was 14th
  • The two teams combined for 27 fouls, 12 committed by Case Western Reserve and 15 by Brandeis
  • Winter, Larson, Washington, Thayer, junior Philip Vlastaris, and first-year Alex Eby each played all 90 minutes
  • CWRU last secured a result against a top five opponents on September 13, 2023, earning a draw on the road against then-fifth-ranked John Carroll
