Case Western Reserve University junior Art Martinez and sophomore Mathew Gummere each recorded two victories to highlight the Spartans' performance at the 2025 University Athletic Association Wrestling Challenge, hosted by the University of Chicago on Saturday.
The Spartans dropped each of the three dual matches at the event, suffering a 37-3 loss to Millikin to begin the day, followed by a 45-3 loss to nationally third-ranked Augsburg in the second match. The third match of the day was closer, but CWRU ultimately succumbed to Aurora by a 33-16 score. The Spartans fell to 0-3 on the season in dual meets following the losses.
Wrestling in the 133-pound match in each of the three contests, Martinez won two of his three matches to 21-4 overall for the campaign. He has now won 15 of his last 17 matches. Gummere picked up two wins in three matches as well, including a pin, raising his season record to 18-9 for the season. Junior 165-pounder Justin Sweeney registered a pin on the day for the team's fifth victory of the event.
In the 37-3 loss to Millikin, the Spartans' lone win came from Gummere (ranked seventh in Region V) in the 184-pound match. Gummere was able to best Tate Crowell with a 4-0 decision, scoring three points in the third period with a takedown and earning a fourth based on riding time.
Martinez, ranked fifth in Region V, provided the team's points in the setback to Augsburg with a 5-4 victory over Chance Suddeth, ranked 15th in the nation and first in Region VII among 133-pounders. Martinez notched three points with a takedown in the first period and added a point with an escape to start the third period to go ahead 4-1. After Suddeth tied the match with a takedown, Martinez earned a point from a late escape and held off Suddeth the rest of the way to secure the win.
Martinez also had a win by major decision during the Spartans' 33-16 loss to Aurora, besting Tyler Evitts (ranked seventh in Region VII) 19-5 in the 133-pound match. Sweeney was besting Shane McEntee 13-5 in the closing seconds of the 165-pound bout when he notched a pin at the 6:56 mark to add six points to the Spartans' team total. Gummere held a 6-1 advantage over Randy Manos in the 184-pound match when he recorded a pin at the 2:34 mark, pulling the Spartans within eight points, 24-16, with two matches remaining. However, Aurora registered a major decision and a technical fall in the 197- and 285-pound matches, respectively, adding nine points to their total and securing the win.
CWRU will continue its dual meet schedule next weekend when the team returns home to host the 2024 Claude Sharer Duals, welcoming Otterbein, Manchester, and St. John Fisher to the Veale Convocation, Recreation, and Athletic Center in Cleveland on Saturday. Action is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.

With the 2-1 performance on Saturday, Martinez improved to 87-26 for his career. He is now tied with former Spartan Glen Geisey (1984-87) for the 17th-most wins over a career in program history.

Sweeney's pin was his first of the season and the fifth of his career. It was his first career pin in a 165-pound match. He improved to 7-10 for the campaign with the win.

Gummere secured his seventh pin of the season, the second-most by a Spartan this season, and one behind Martinez for the team lead.
