Women’s Basketball Handed 72-60 Road Loss at Rochester

Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Mya Hartjes scored 17 points and collected eight rebounds to lead the team on Friday night, but it was not enough for the Spartans who suffered a 72-60 road loss to the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Spartans who dropped to 6-1 overall and 1-5 in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets improved to 10-7 overall with a 2-4 league record.

Hartjes matched her career high with six made field goals on 13 attempts and five made three-pointers on seven tries while adding eight rebounds, two assists, and a block. Junior guard/forward Emily Plachta added 10 points, and senior forward Evie Miller finished with seven points, eight rebounds, and a career-high-matching three assists.

Two of Hartjes' four first-half three-pointers came in the first two minutes of the game, helping CWRU jump out to a 6-1 advantage. The Spartans continued to lead until a 10-0 run by Rochester gave the Yellowjackets a 15-11 lead with 3:20 left in the opening frame. Hartjes hit another three to trim the lead to a point, and a pair of free throws from Plachta gave the Spartans the lead back, 16-15. The teams continued to go back and forth, with the score tied at 20-20 by the end of the first period.

Sophomore guard Jordyn Call scored the first five points of the second quarter to put the Spartans ahead 25-20 with 9:00 left in the half. CWRU led by as many as six points in the frame and maintained the advantage until the 1:18 mark when a Rochester three put the Spartans behind by a point, but senior guard Nyah Moore responded with a three of her own just 16 seconds later to put CWRU back on top 36-34 heading into halftime.

The game took a turn in the third for CWRU as Rochester connected on a three to start the period and never trailed again in the game. The Spartans were down just a point, 42-41, following a three by Call with 5:40 left, but the Yellowjackets scored 14 of the final 18 points in the period to take a 56-45 lead into the fourth quarter. Rochester maintained a double-digit lead until an 8-0 run by CWRU, capped off by a traditional three-point play from sophomore guard Olivia Franciscus with 1:39 left, trimmed the lead back to single digits before the Yellowjackets added a late three for the 12-point win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 23-of-67 overall (34.3%) and 11-of-34 from three-point range (32.4%). CWRU outrebounded Rochester 44-37 on Friday.

CWRU will travel to Atlanta for an 11:30 a.m. game on Sunday, February 2 at Emory University.
