The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team struggled to contend with the top-ranked team in Division III and reigning National Champion New York University Violets on Sunday afternoon, falling 107-31 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
The Spartans dropped to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the University Athletic Association following the loss, which was the third-straight setback for the team. NYU remained undefeated on the season, improving to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in the league.
CWRU jumped out to a 5-2 lead by the 8:51 mark after a three from junior guard/forward Emily Plachta and a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Maura Schorr. However, the Violets went on to take the lead with an 8-2 run over the next three and a half minutes to go ahead 10-7. CWRU pulled back within a point at 12-11 after a layup by Plachta with 2:55 left in the frame, but NYU scored five of the final seven points in the period to take a 17-13 lead into the second period.
The Violets' run continued into the second frame, as NYU scored the first five points of the period and eight of the first nine to push their advantage to 11 points, 25-14, with 7:29 left in the half. Back-to-back baskets by Plachta and senior forward Evie Miller trimmed the lead down to seven, but a 24-3 run by the Violets to end the period gave NYU a 28-point lead, 49-21, at the end of the first half. NYU continued to build on their lead throughout the second half, taking an 80-27 edge by the end of the third before closing out the lopsided victory.
Plachta led all Spartans on Sunday with eight points. Miller paced the team with nine rebounds, and Schorr added seven rebounds, two steals, and three blocks.
The Spartans will be back on the road next weekend for a pair of UAA games. CWRU will take on Rochester at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 31 in Rochester, New York, and Emory at 11:30 a.m. in Atlanta on Sunday, February 2.
