Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls to Brandeis 72-60

Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Mya Hartjes scored a team-high 17 points and sophomore forward Maura Schorr added a career-high 16 points, but it was not enough for the Spartans who suffered a 72-60 loss to Brandeis University on Friday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the University Athletic Association while Brandeis raised its record to 9-6 with a 2-2 conference mark.

Schorr turned in the best performance of her career in the game, hitting a personal-best six-of-14 shots and surpassing her career-high with three three-pointers on six attempts. She also collected a career-best 11 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season and added a career-high matching five steals in the game. Schorr's 16 points surpassed her previous career-best mark of 11, set twice earlier this season.

Hartjes led all CWRU players with 17 points on a five-of-17 effort from the floor, including three-of-eight from long range, and dished out a career-high matching seven assists with four rebounds, a steal, and a block. Senior forward Evie Miller added nine points and seven rebounds for the Spartans.

The Spartans jumped out to a 6-2 lead after a three by Schorr with 6:24 left in the first period, but Brandeis ended the period on a 16-4 run to take an 18-10 lead into the second period. The Judges quickly pushed their advantage to 10 points after a basket to start the second quarter, but layups on back-to-back possessions by Hartjes cut the lead to six points, and a three from senior guard Nyah Moore trimmed the Judges edge to just three points, 20-17, with 7:19 left in the frame. However, that would be as close as the Spartans would get for the remainder of the half, as the Judges extended their lead to as many as nine points over the rest of the period before taking a 34-27 lead into halftime.

A pair of free throws from junior guard/forward Emily Plachta with 8:42 left followed by a Brandeis turnover and a three from Hartjes allowed the Spartans to pull within four, 36-32, with 8:05 left in the third. The Judges remained up by four with 6:20 left before launching on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 45-34 with 5:19 on the clock in the third and took a 12-point advantage with 3:45 left in the frame, before carrying a 56-49 edge into the final period.

The Spartans quickly went to work in the fourth, scoring the first five points of the period and pulling within two, 56-54, on a three by Schorr with 8:43 to play in the game. After exchanging baskets, the Judges increased their lead back to eight with a 6-0 run that put them ahead 64-56 with 5:49 left. The Spartans would not get any closer the rest of the way as Brandeis was able to hold on for the road conference win.

CWRU shot 32.8% overall on Friday, including 29.6% from behind the three-point line, while Brandeis finished the game shooting 41.4% from the floor and 29.4% from long range.

The Spartans will welcome top-ranked and reigning NCAA Division III Champion New York University to Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Sunday for a noon tip-off.
