No. 16 Women’s Soccer Opens Road Trip with 3-2 Win Over Puget Sound

The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team began its four-match road trip with a 3-2 win over the University of Puget Sound on Friday evening at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Washington.

The Spartans improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Loggers fell to 0-2-1.

CWRU quickly broke the deadlock with a goal just 63 seconds into the contest. From midfield, senior Abigail Meneses found junior Alexis Sassower in the middle of the pitch. Sassower passed the ball to senior Sydney Schenk on an unmarked run into the box, and Schenk bested the goalkeeper with a shot into the low corner. It was her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career. Sassower earned her first assist in 2024 on the play.

Just 20 minutes later, the Spartans doubled their advantage with a goal by junior Molly Shamah. Junior Maggie Farra sent a cross into the box from along the endline that found the head of Shamah on the far side of the goal. She directed the ball over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net for her second tally of the season. Farra picked up her third assist of the year on the goal.

In the 51st minute, Sassower added to the lead. Junior Jamie Goldfarb sent a pass to Sassower, who was sprinting toward the top of the box. She fired a shot on her first touch from about 18 yards away from the goal, slotting the ball into the lower corner for the score. It was her second goal in as many games and marked Goldfarb's first assist this season.

The Loggers broke the shutout with a goal in the 57th minute and halved their deficit by scoring in the 78th minute. However, CWRU was able to keep UPS scoreless over the final 12 minutes to preserve the lead and secure the win.

Graduate student goalkeeper Maggie Storti earned the win in front of the net for the Spartans, improving to 2-0-0 this season. She saved four shots.

The Spartans will stay in Tacoma for their next game, facing Pacific Lutheran University tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET on the PLU campus.
