The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team used a goal late in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw with Pacific Lutheran University at East Field in Tacoma, Washington, on Saturday night.
The Spartans moved to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Lutes now stand at 1-1-2.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes. Despite the scoreline, CWRU controlled possession for much of the period, totaling seven shots to Pacific Lutheran's two. Of the Spartans' shots, four came on goal with strikes from juniors Ceci Dapino and Alexis Sassower and seniors Sydney Schenk and Carolyn Koutures requiring saves.
Pacific Lutheran broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute on a goal by Kiana Gutierrez.
CWRU quickly tied the score, evening the contest in the 79th minute on a goal by Schenk. Junior Mackenzie Mueller found Schenk at the top of the box, and the senior sent a one-time shot into the top right corner of the goal for the equalizer. It was Schenk's second goal in as many contests.
Both sides put a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes, but neither were able to find the back of the net.
Overall, CWRU outshot PLU 14-6 and held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Schenk fired six shots in the contest, including three on goal, and Koutures and Dapino each had two attempts at scoring. Graduate student goalkeeper Maggie Storti recorded two saves in 90 minutes.
The Spartans will continue their road trip next week, making a much shorter trip to Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, on Wednesday, September 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
