Case Western Reserve University junior midfielder Jamie Goldfarb scored in the waning seconds of the opening half and the defense protected the advantage throughout the second half as the 13th-ranked Spartans bested Ohio Wesleyan University 1-0 on Monday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
With the win, the Spartans capped off their non-conference schedule with a 7-0-3 overall record. The Battling Bishops fell to 7-3-0 with the loss.
The game appeared to be headed into halftime scoreless before the Spartans struck for a goal with just two seconds remaining in the first half. The Bishops committed a foul in the middle of the field just outside the 18-yard box with 25 seconds left in the frame. Goldfarb rushed to take the ensuing free kick and sent a perfect shot over the hands of the diving Ohio Wesleyan keeper and into the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The goal was Goldfarb's second of the campaign.
CWRU outshot Ohio Wesleyan 7-1 in the first half and 8-2 in the second half of the contest and finished the game with a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, limiting the Bishops' opportunities for much of the contest for the team's fifth shutout of the campaign.
Graduate student goalkeeper Maggie Storti made a pair of saves in the game and notched her team-leading fourth shutout of the campaign. She lowered her goals-against average to 0.61 for the season with the effort.
With the Spartans' regular season non-conference schedule now complete, CWRU will turn its attention to the start of its conference schedule. The Spartans will open University Athletic Association play at home on Saturday, October 5 at 11:00 a.m. against 19th-ranked New York University.
