Case Western Reserve University junior forward Molly Shamah scored the game-equalizing goal in the 78th minute to help the 12th-ranked Spartans open University Athletic Association play with a 1-1 tie against 16th-ranked New York University on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
Both teams remained undefeated on the season with the tie, as the Spartans and the Violets each moved to 7-0-4 on the campaign and to 0-0-1 in the UAA.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans found themselves down 1-0 after NYU's Kelli Keady struck for her third goal of the season in the 56th minute to break the tie. The Violets held the one-goal advantage for the next 22 minutes of play before Shamah was able to even the score with her team-leading fifth goal of the campaign. The goal was set up by senior defender Katie Rishel, who intercepted a pass in the middle of the field and sent a long pass forward to the feet of Shamah. Shamah was then able to dribble around a slide tackle by an NYU defender at the edge of the box and sent a low shot inside the far post for the goal at the 77:21 mark.
Shamah now has 11 points this season (five goals and one assist), second among all Spartan players.
While Shamah's goal would prove to be the final score of the game, CWRU had one final opportunity to take the lead in the closing seconds. First-year midfielder Abby Welker headed a goal kick forward to junior forward Alexis Sassower, who was able to get a shot off around a defender from about 12 yards out with 12 seconds left in the game, but the attempt was stopped on a dive by the NYU keeper, and the game ended in a draw.
CWRU graduate student goalkeeper Maggie Storti played all 90 minutes in the game and made four saves, improving to 7-0-4 with a 0.64 goals-against average and a 0.825 save percentage.
Junior midfielder Ceci Dapino led the team with three shots, including a pair on goal. The Spartans finished the game with seven total shots, including four on goal, while NYU registered 13 shots with five finding the target.
The Spartans will continue UAA play next weekend, traveling to Atlanta to face 13th-ranked Emory at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 13.
