Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 15 Women’s Soccer Scores Five Times in Win over Mount Union

The 15th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team defeated the University of Mount Union 5-0 on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland to remain unbeaten on the season.

The Spartans improved to 4-0-2 on the season, while the Purple Raiders fell to 2-4-0.

Junior Alexis Sassower had her first career two-goal game, scoring twice for the Spartans in the contest to increase her team lead to four goals during the season. She has also contributed two assists in 2024, bringing her point total to 10 through six games.

It was junior Mackenzie Mueller who broke the deadlock in the 10th minute. A Mount Union throw in was deflected toward her. Muller then evaded a defender and found a spot at the top of the box to shoot. She fired the ball with her left foot into the top left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

Though the Spartans dominated possession throughout the first half, they were unable to add to their lead. That quickly changed at the beginning of the second period. Less than two minutes into the second half, junior Ceci Dapino found the back of the net for the second time in 2024. She collected the ball near the sideline about 30 yards from the goal and dribbled toward the middle of the field. After faking out a defender, she opened enough space to shoot and arced a high shot over the goalkeeper's head for the second tally of the day.

In the 50th minute, Sassower scored her first goal of the game, shooting from just outside the box and keeping the ball within the far post. Mueller earned an assist on the play with a short pass to Sassower, her second of the season. Seven minutes later, Sassower fired the ball after a save toward the top of the net. The ball hit the crossbar and bounded over the endline for the fourth score of the contest. Senior Montgomarie Essex, whose shot was saved before Sassower scored, earned her first collegiate assist.

Senior Carolyn Koutures had her first goal of the season to wrap up the scoring in the 87th minute with an assist from junior Molly Shamah.

Defensively, the Spartans held the Purple Raiders to three total shots and only two on goal. Senior Katie Rishel and first-year Kinzly Gootman each played all 90 minutes on the backline to lead the team's without the ball. In goal, graduate student Maggie Storti earned the win, playing the first 69 minutes and making one save. First-year Ellie Palaian made her collegiate debut, recording one save in 22 minutes of action in front of the net.

Case Western Reserve totaled 20 shots in the game, including three each from Dapino, Sassower, and sophomore Kat Tsarouhas. Nine of the 20 shots were on target.

CWRU will remain home and host Capital on Saturday for Senior Day. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
