Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Spartans Score Twice Late to Defeat Stockton at Home

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated Stockton University 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, scoring twice in the final 17 minutes to earn the home victory.

The Spartans improved to 3-2-0 on the season while the Ospreys fell to 1-3-2.

Despite outshooting the visitors 5-4 and controlling possession for the first 45 minutes, CWRU trailed 1-0 at halftime. Stockton scored on a corner kick in the 25th minute with Nico Calambas earning his first tally of the season.

The hosts earned a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, drawing a key foul in the box. Graduate student Kellan Landefeld calmly took the shot from the spot, tying the score at one with his first goal of the season.

The Ospreys responded 10 minutes later, reclaiming the lead off another set piece goal. Ernst Louisius scored for the visitors, making the score 2-1.

Just 36 seconds later, the Spartans evened the score for the second time in the half. Sophomore Cormac Apostolides sent a ball into the middle of the box in front of the net, and the pass was intentionally deflected by first-year Amir Awais. First-year Ashton McNally fired a hard shot past the goalkeeper for his first collegiate score. Awais and Apostolides both earned their first career assists on the play.

CWRU earned a second penalty shot in the 85th minute with McNally drawing the foul in the box. This time, senior Kysen Kroeger converted from the spot, putting Case Western Reserve ahead for the first time in the contest.

The hosts survived the final five minutes, defending the Osprey attack and clearing a corner kick to preserve the win.

Junior Stephen Vilardo faced nine shots and saved two for the Spartans to earn his first collegiate victory in goal. McNally and senior Lukas Dalakis each had two shots and seven other CWRU players took a try on goal.

Case Western Reserve will next face Marietta on Wednesday at DiSanto Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Spartan Notes

  • Kroeger scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season with the penalty kick goal, which was his first career attempt from the spot. It was also his third game-winning score in 2024
  • Landefeld scored his first goal as a Spartan and the second of his career after finding the back of the net once as an undergraduate student at Michigan State. He also took his first career penalty kick
  • The Spartans earned two penalty kicks in a game for the first time since October 28, 2018, when they converted twice in a 3-0 win over Emory
