The 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team responded to its season-opening loss with a defiant 4-0 non-conference win over the College of Wooster on Sunday at Carl Dale Field in Wooster, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 1-1-0.
Senior Kysen Kroeger scored a pair of goals in the contest, starting and capping the scoring for the visitors. He put Case Western Reserve on the board early in the match, scoring the team's first goal of the season in the sixth minute. Sophomore Adam Pluszczyk recorded his first career assist on the strike. Kroeger registered his second goal of the contest in the 86th minute, collecting a rebound off a saved shot by senior Lukas Dalakis and firing into the back of the net. It was Dalakis's first assist this season and the sixth of his career.
Nearly a half hour after the first tally, sophomore David Pineda scored his first career goal, doubling the team's lead in the 34th minute. Junior Stephen Vilardo earned his first career assist on the play.
With just two seconds remaining in the first half, senior Brandon Kim registered the third goal of the game for CWRU with his seventh career goal. Sophomore Ohta Kamiya picked up his first career assist for his effort on the goal.
Junior Bradley Winter played all 90 minutes in front of the net for CWRU, saving two shots. Junior Phillip Washington and sophomore Cormac Apostolides were on the field for the entire contest on the backline and sophomore Cameron Thayer (88 minutes) and graduate student Eshwar Challa (80 minutes) greatly contributed to the clean sheet as starting defenders.
Overall, CWRU limited the Fighting Scots to nine shots in the contest, with just two coming on goal. Case Western Reserve finished with 16 shots during the game led by Kroeger and Pineda with three each. Dalakis, Pluszczyk, and Kim all had multiple attempts on goal.
The Spartans will next head to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for a matchup against Lycoming University on Saturday, September 7 at 4 p.m.
