No. 16 Women’s Soccer Opens Johnson Era with Five-Goal Win

The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team won its first game under Head Coach Alyssa Johnson, defeating Kenyon College 5-0 on DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Friday night.

With the win, the Spartans started the season with a record of 1-0-0 while the Owls fell to 0-1-0.

Junior Jamie Goldfarb started the team's scoring in the 11th minute, scoring her first goal of the season and the sixth of her career. Senior Katie Rishel collected a loose ball at the top of the box and sent it to an unmarked Goldfarb. The junior then chipped the ball past the goalkeeper for the first tally of the season. It marked Rishel's first assist of the season and the third of her career.

Junior Alexis Sassower doubled the Spartan advantage just seven minutes later, scoring her first goal of the campaign and the third of her career. Sassower received a pass from junior Maggie Farra just outside of the box, near the far top corner. She lofted a left-footed strike from 20 yards away, outside the reach of a diving keeper and into the back of the net. Farra collected her third career assist on the play and her first of two in the contest.

CWRU then added two more goals in the span of 56 seconds, increasing its lead to four just 21 minutes into the contest. First, sophomore Kat Tsarouhas scored her first collegiate goal after collecting an errant clearance at the top of the box and nailing the crossbar and dropping the ball past the endline. Then, junior Ceci Dapino fired a shot from close range that was saved by the goalkeeper. She secured her own rebound and sent the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for her first tally of the season and the seventh of her career.

Both teams were held scoreless over the next 64 minutes. Junior Molly Shamah finished the scoring in the 85th minute, scoring her third career goal after receiving consecutive passes from Farra and first-year Abby Welker, who picked up her first collegiate assist.

In goal, senior Maggie Storti earned her 27th career shutout and 50th career win to extend her own program record in both categories. She recorded two saves in 90 minutes as the Spartan defense allowed just three total shots in the contest. Offensively, Case Western Reserve had 33 shots, including 15 on goal, with 14 players taking at least one attempt at the net. Dapino paced the squad with seven shots, and five other players made three attempts at goal.

CWRU will be on the road for its next four contests, starting with a trip to Washington to face the University of Puget Sound on Friday, September 6 at 8 p.m. ET.
