No. 6 Spartans Drop Two to WashU on Saturday

The sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped a pair of games to Washington University in St. Louis at the WashU Softball Field in St. Louis on Saturday, falling 5-2 in the first game and 3-0 in the second contest.

The Spartans dropped to 24-4 on the season and 9-2 in University Athletic Association games. The Bears improved to 19-8 overall and 8-3 in conference contests.

Game 1: WashU 5, #6 CWRU 2

Looking to continue momentum from their win yesterday, the Spartans stuck first with two runs in the second inning.

Sophomore Elizabeth Berry started the frame with a single, and junior Isabella Russo reached on an error. First-year Alaina Steffes drove both runners home with a double, her 10th of the season, to give CWRU a 2-0 lead.

After four scoreless innings, the hosts scored five times in the fifth inning to take a three-run lead.

CWRU was unable to mount a comeback in the final two frames, suffering its first loss in 17 games.

Junior pitcher Kylie Hosey (10-1) took her first loss of the season in the circle, allowing four runs on seven hits in four and one-third innings. Junior pitcher Lexi Miskey pitched the final one and two-third innings, allowing a run on two hits and two walks.

Steffes had her third multi-hit game of the season, collecting two of the team's four knocks. Berry and senior KaiLi Gross recorded the other two hits, with Gross and junior catcher Katelyn Lamm each drawing a walk.

Game 2: WashU 3, #6 CWRU 0

WashU scored in the first inning on a single, and the hosts added two runs in the third on a single and triple.

The Spartan offense could not solve Bear pitcher Maria Brooks (7-1), managing just two hits and two walks in seven innings.

Steffes and Berry logged the CWRU hits, with Steffes hitting her team-leading 11th double of the year. Berry and Russo each drew a walk.

Sophomore Devanghi Misra (0-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing one run on four hits in two innings. Miskey gave up two runs in three innings, and senior pitcher Jenna Jaklich pitched a perfect sixth.

The offensive shutout was the first for Case Western Reserve since the team lost 1-0 to Trine on May 20, 2022 in the NCAA Super Regional, a span of 73 games.

CWRU will look to split the series tomorrow when the two teams conclude their four-game series with a single game scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
