#4 Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Grove City 9-0

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked fourth in Division III, recorded its third-straight sweep on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Grove City College 9-0 at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland.

It was the seventh-consecutive win overall for the Spartans who improved to 20-4 for the campaign. The Wolverines dropped to 7-5 with the loss.

In doubles action, sophomore Anmay Devaraj and junior Casey Hishinuma bested Jose Pablo Leon and Josiah Newton 8-3 at no. 2 doubles, and seniors Sahil Dayal and Vishwa Aduru were triumphant 8-3 at no. 1 doubles over Gavin Miller and Jameson Sposato. The last doubles match came down to the wire, but first-years Santiago Salazar Garza and George Kosseifi claimed an 8-7 (2) win over Benjamin Jones and Collier Kaufman at no. 3 doubles to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

It was the fourth straight contest that CWRU has won each of the doubles matches.

CWRU continued to roll in singles play with Hishnuma winning over Miller 6-0, 6-2 at no. 3 singles and Kosseifi clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Isaac DeMan at no. 5 singles. Adding onto the Spartan victory were sophomore Matthew Plunkett with a 6-2, 6-1 against Sposato in the fourth singles match, first-year Derek Shiffer with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Kaufman in the sixth singles match, graduate student Diego Maza with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Newton at no. 2 singles, and junior Ajay Mahenthiran with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Jones at no. 1 singles.

The Spartans have now swept singles play 13 times through 24 matches this season.

The Spartans will be back in action next Friday, April 19, hosting Kalamazoo College at 9:00 a.m. and 14th-ranked Denison University at 1:00 p.m. at the Carlton Courts. Friday will also mark 'Senior Day' for the Spartans, who will honor the team's graduating players before the start of their match against Kalamazoo.
