The sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team extended its winning streak to 16 games with a 3-1 victory over Washington University in St. Louis on Friday afternoon at the WashU Softball Field in St. Louis.
The Spartans improved to 24-2 on the season and 9-0 in University Athletic Association play. The Bears fell to 17-8 and 6-3 in the UAA. The 16-game winning streak is the second-longest in program history, trailing only last season's 20-game unbeaten run.
CWRU tallied a pair of runs in the first inning, opening a quick 2-0 lead. Senior Stevie Rieger brought home the first run with a two-out double, plating first-year Karen Potts. Rieger then crossed home on a single from sophomore Elizabeth Berry.
The two runs would be more than enough for junior Lexi Miskey, who threw six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts while only allowing three hits. She improved to 14-2 on the season and earned her 53rd career win, tying a program record held by former Spartan Annie Wennerberg.
Rieger scored the third run of the game in the sixth inning, touching home on a groundout from Berry. She doubled earlier in the inning for her third two-double game of 2024 and the fourth of her career.
The Bears scored once in the seventh, but senior pitcher Jenna Jaklich induced a fly out to end the game with the tying run at the plate.
Rieger and Potts each collected two hits in the game, and Berry drove in two runs. Junior Isabella Russo and first-year Alaina Steffes added hits, and CWRU handed Jordan Rossi (4-1) her first loss of the season in the circle.
The Spartans and Bears will resume their four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
