The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Bob Kahn Invitational hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday and the WashU Distance Carnival hosted by Washington University in St. Louis on Thursday and Friday. The teams turned in top results at both meets, winning six events and recording competitive times and marks on the national level.
A pair of distance runners on the men's team ran at WashU. Junior Aidan Nathan recorded the second-fastest time in program history in the 10,000-meter run, finishing the distance race in 29:55.15. Nathan placed 18th in the event and eighth among Division III competition with the 10th-fastest time in the country this season. Junior Nate Gilbert placed 13th in the 1500-meter run, and seventh among Division III competitors, in 3:55.90, the 21st-best time in the country.
The CWRU men's team won two events at the Bob Kahn Invite. Senior Yusuf Shaaban and first-year Tanush Anand both cleared 1.94 meters in the high jump, the 14th-best mark in Division III this season. Shaaban won the event, clearing the bar in one fewer attempt than Anand. Spartans placed first and third in the 100-meter dash, with graduate student Juan Perez winning the event in 11.05 seconds and senior Brett Callow taking the bronze in 11.20 seconds.
Perez and Callow joined graduate student Keith Cartwright and sophomore Josh Bates for the 4x100-meter relay, finishing second with a time of 41.56 seconds, the eighth-best time in the country. Bates added a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.75 seconds, and Callow (22.45 seconds) and Perez (22.50 seconds) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
In the 110-meter hurdles, graduate student Peculiar Nzegbuna was the runner-up after crossing the line after 15.99 seconds and sophomore Joshua Park placed third in 16.04 seconds.
The Case Western Reserve 4x400-meter relay of first-years Seth Tivakaran and Praveen Sureshkumar and juniors William DeYoung and Nicolas Lende finished third in the race in 3:29.05.
In the field, sophomore Anthony DeCarlo cleared 4.25 meters in the pole vault to place second.
The Spartan women's team was victorious in four events in Oberlin. Three vaulters, first-year Annie Wank, graduate student Victoria Zhao, and first-year Holly Schreiber, cleared 3.35 meters in the pole vault, the 21st-best mark in Division III. Wank tied for first in the event by needing just one attempt, while Zhao and Schreiber tied for third after needing two attempts.
Sophomore Ayla Grabenbauer won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:12.61, 16th-fastest in Division III, and junior Lauren Roskuszka placed first in the javelin throw with a toss of 37.94 meters, ranking 27th in Division III. Roskuszka added a runner-up finish in the hammer throw, placing second with a heave of 46.33 meters.
The 4x400-meter relay of sophomores Melanie Taylor and Arianna Holbrook and seniors Grace Jackson and Jessica Kwasny was first to cross the finish line, doing so at 4:11.31. Holbrook finished second in the 800-meter run in 2:21.56, and Jackson placed third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:59.89.
Seniors Emily Hopkins and Elise Moore, junior Sarah Ozeki, and sophomore Grace Misiunas represented CWRU in the 4x100-meter relay, placing second in 52.57 seconds. Three of the four runners also contributed top-three finishes as individuals. Hopkins was second in the triple jump after bounding 10.60 meters, Moore placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.29, and Misiunas finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.52 seconds.
Junior Jordan Su leaped 4.81 meters in the long jump to take third place in the event.
The CWRU throwers will next travel to Wooster, Ohio, for the Wooster Invitational on April 5, while the rest of the teams will participate in the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on April 6.
