The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams each placed second at the two-day Amy Adams Memorial Invitational, hosted by Muskingum University at the Johnson Family Track in New Concord, Ohio.
The CWRU men's team, which won two events at the meet, finished with 105.5 points, trailing only Division II Walsh University with 118.5 points. The Spartan women's team, winners of two events, finished with 93.0 points, also trailing Walsh who ended the competition with 152.0 points.
Senior Yusuf Shaaban claimed an event win in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing first in 56.53 seconds. He was followed closely by sophomore teammate Josh Bates, who was the runner-up in 56.73 seconds. Bates helped the team win 4x100-meter relay in 42.23 seconds, the 16th-fastest time in Division III this season, joining graduate student Keith Cartwright, senior Brett Callow, and graduate student Juan Perez for the race. In the 4x400-meter relay, Bates and Callow teamed with first-year Praveen Sureshkumar and junior Nicolas Lende to place second in 3:27.05.
The Spartans had success in the high hurdles, with sophomore Joshua Park finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles with a finals time of 15.87 seconds and graduate student Peculiar Nzegbuna placing third in 16.29 seconds.
In the 2000-meter steeplechase, first-year Angel Zeferino placed second in 7:05.82, and in the 400-meter dash, first-year Jeremiah Broughton placed third in 50.71 seconds.
CWRU had top five finishes in four events in the field. First-year Tanush Anand placed second in the high jump by clearing 1.90 meters, 13th-best in Division III this season, and third in the triple jump by bounding 13.29 meters. Junior Andrew Qi finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.77 meters.
Cartwright added a third-place finish in the javelin throw with a heave of 49.71 meters, and sophomore Anthony DeCarlo cleared 4.12 meters in the pole vault to place fifth.
The CWRU women's team earned the top two spots in the 2000-meter steeplechase, with sophomore Ayla Grabenbauer winning the event in 7:44.69 and junior Alyssa Storm placing second in 8:41.25. Grabenbauer joined sophomore Melanie Taylor, senior Jessica Kwasny, and sophomore Grace Misiunas for the 4x400-meter relay, winning the event in 4:15.20.
In other distance action, sophomore Lauren Iagnemma was the runner-up in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:49.01, 38th-fastest in Division III this season, and senior Grace Jackson placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:24.15. Misiunas added a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a finals time of 16.87 seconds after completing the preliminary heat in 16.70 seconds.
The Spartans placed six student-athletes in the top five in three field events at the meet. In the triple jump, junior Sarah Ozeki placed second by bounding 10.69 meters and senior Emily Hopkins finished fourth with a mark of 10.54 meters. In the javelin throw, junior Lauren Roskuszka had the second-best toss of 32.15 meters and sophomore Madison Martinez finished fifth with a throw of 25.84 meters. Roskuszka added a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw with a heave of 44.94 meters, finishing behind senior Ailean Duffie, who placed third with a mark of 45.97 meters. Duffie's toss currently ranks 19th in Division III this season.
The Spartans will compete next weekend at the two-day Bob Kahn Invitational, hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Action on Friday, March 29 is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with competition resuming on Saturday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m.
