CWRU Baseball Falls to #21 Arcadia and Swarthmore on Monday

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team dropped a pair of games on Monday afternoon, falling 9-1 to 21st-ranked Arcadia University and 9-8 to Swarthmore College at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina.

The Spartans fell to 6-4 overall with the two losses.

Game 1 - #21 Arcadia 9, CWRU 1
Arcadia held the Spartans' bats in check during the first game of the day as CWRU was held to a single run in a 9-1 loss to Arcadia in the team's first game of the day.

Graduate student catcher James Powers led the team with a three-for-four showing including a pair of doubles, and drove in the only run of the game for CWRU. Junior left fielder Logan Andreyko added a two-for-four game with a double and scored the Spartans' lone run.

After Arcadia scored a run in the top of the first, the Spartans answered back in the bottom of the inning when Andreyko doubled off the right field wall on the first pitch of the frame and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Powers. However, Arcadia responded with two more runs in the top of the second and added single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to expand its lead to 7-1. The Knights scored two more in the ninth to increase their advantage to eight.

Sophomore starter Archer Stankowski suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts over four innings. Junior Jackson Brewer pitched five innings in relief, allowing just one earned run (four total) on five hits with five strikeouts.

Arcadia's Nadell Booker earned the win with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief work, improving to 1-1 on the year. Arcadia raised its record to 7-3 with the victory.

Game 2 - Swarthmore 9, CWRU 8
A late comeback attempt by the Spartans fell a run short in the second game of the day as the Spartans suffered a 9-8 setback to the Garnet in the late game on Monday.

Three different CWRU players - graduate student catcher Jack Anderson, graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen, and Andreyko - each homered in the game. Anderson finished the game a triple shy of the cycle, going three-for-five with three runs and an RBI. Camphausen, Powers, and first-year designated hitter Carson Walker each added a pair of hits in the game.

CWRU struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead two batters into the game on a solo home run by Anderson. The Spartans remained ahead until a three-run home run in the bottom of the second put Swarthmore in front 3-1. CWRU responded in the top of the third with a three-run outburst, scoring a run on a single by Powers and two more on a two-out double by Walker with runners on the corners, taking a 4-3 lead. However, the Garnet went on to score six unanswered runs between the third and seventh innings, grabbing a 9-4 advantage heading into the top of the eighth.

The Spartans' comeback began in the eighth with a leadoff double by Anderson, followed by a base hit by Powers that put runners on the corners with nobody out. Junior right fielder Nick Harms followed with a sacrifice fly, and then Camphausen connected for his second home run in as many days, hitting one deep over the wall in left-center to cut the deficit to 9-7.

Andreyko cut into the lead further with a home run to lead off the ninth inning, pulling CWRU back within a run. Swarthmore's Steven Jungers got the next two outs before issuing a walk to Harms to put the tying run on the basepaths but was able to get a strikeout to end the game and secure the win for the Garnet.

Swarthmore's Noah Potholm pitched seven and a third innings to earn the win, improving to 2-0 on the year, while Jungers secured his second save of the campaign. CWRU junior starter Kyle Gearding suffered the loss, falling to 0-2 for the campaign.

The Spartans will continue play at Lexington County Stadium on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. against Trinity College (Conn.).
