The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team started its 2024 campaign with a 5-0 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday night at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Georgia, as part of the 2024 NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic.
The Spartans began the season with a record of 1-0 while the Crusaders fell to 2-2 on the year.
Senior Kela Jagoda, first-year Karen Potts, senior Savannah Gazda, junior Katelyn Lamm, and senior Stevie Rieger all had two-hit days to start the season. Lamm slugged her first career home run, Rieger struck for a pair of doubles, and Jagoda added a triple.
CWRU scored in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring single by Gazda. Potts, who singled earlier in the frame for her first collegiate hit, scored on the play. Â
Starting in the bottom of the first, junior Lexi Miskey was in midseason form in the circle, striking out the first nine batters she faced and not allowing a hit until two outs in the fourth inning. She finished the game with 10 strikeouts in five innings of work, allowing just two hits and no walks to pick up her first win of the season.
Senior infielder KaiLi Gross doubled the CWRU lead with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, her first round-tripper of the season and the 11th of her career.
Potts added a run in the top of the sixth with a single, recording her first career run batted in. A solo home run by Lamm in the top of the seventh made the score 5-0.
Junior Kylie Hosey completed the game with two scoreless innings, allowing just two baserunners and striking out one. Chloee Mason took the loss for Mary Hardin-Baylor, falling to 1-2 on the season.
Due to inclement weather in the area, Case Western Reserve's schedule on Friday has changed. The team's contest with 12th-ranked Belhaven, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., has been delayed to 5 p.m. In addition, the scheduled game between the Spartans and seventh-ranked Linfield has been postponed. Fans are encouraged to check the CWRU Softball Schedule page for any further updates throughout the weekend.
