Graduate student Peculiar Nzegbuna of the Case Western Reserve University men's track and field team earned the second All-University Athletic Association honor of his career on the second and final day of the 2024 UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by New York University at the Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan, New York, on Sunday.
Nzegbuna placed third in the 60-meter hurdles final on Sunday in 8.52 seconds to claim All-UAA honors and record the fourth-best time in program history. It is the second conference honor of his career after he placed third in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2023 UAA Outdoor Championships. The third-place finish is also the highest a Spartan has placed in the event since Grant Mlack finished second at the 2016 UAA Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Joshua Park also competed in the final of the event for CWRU, placing seventh with a time of 8.73 seconds.
In the field, sophomore Anthony DeCarlo placed fifth in the pole vault by clearing 4.51 meters, the fifth-highest mark in program history. Junior Andrew Qi also earned points for the Spartans, placing sixth in the triple jump by bounding 13.50 meters, the fourth-best mark ever by a CWRU student-athlete.
Both senior Brett Callow and graduate student Keith Cartwright raced in finals of sprint events for Case Western Reserve. Cartwright placed sixth in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line at 22.63 seconds for the third-fastest time in program history. Callow finished eighth in the 60-meter dash in 7.23 seconds.
To close the day, the 4x400-meter relay of sophomore Josh Bates, first-year runners Nico Matt and Jeremiah Broughton, and senior Yusuf Shaaban placed fifth in 3:22.95.
Overall, the Spartans placed fifth in the conference standings with 37.5 points. Carnegie Mellon won the league championship with 177.0 points, followed by Emory with 137.0 points, Chicago with 126.5 points, and WashU with 97.0 points. Trailing CWRU were NYU (35.0 points) and Brandeis (12.0 points).
Members of the track and field team will have one more weekend of opportunity to record qualifying marks for the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Spartans with top 100 national marks will head to either the Mount Union Last Chance Meet in Alliance, Ohio, or the Tufts National Qualifier in Medford, Massachusetts, on Saturday, March 2 to attempt to improve on their times and marks. Selections for the national championship will be announced in the evening on Sunday, March 3 on ncaa.com with the meet held on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
