Women’s Basketball Defeats Brandeis in Final Road Game of Season, 71-64

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team ended a seven-game losing streak with a 71-64 victory over Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon at the Red Auerbach Arena inside the Gosman Center in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 9-13 this season with the win and 2-9 in University Athletic Association games. The Judges fell to 5-17 on the season and 1-10 in UAA contests.

Five players scored in double figures for the Spartans, led by 15 from senior guard Sarah Mitchell, her sixth consecutive game with at least 10 points. She added five rebounds and four steals. Graduate student forward Morgan Micallef contributed 14 points and four rebounds, senior forward Kayla Characklis scored 12 points and pulled down six boards, and first-year guard Mya Hartjes added 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and five assists. Adding 10 points and six rebounds was sophomore guard Emily Plachta, and senior guard Margaret Terry dished out a team-high seven assists.

The hosts led by four points midway through the first quarter before a 6-0 CWRU run gave the Spartans their first lead of the afternoon. Brandeis regained a two-point advantage with 39 seconds left in the frame, leading 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.

A three-pointer by graduate student forward Kate Montgomery and layup from Micallef to start the second quarter gave the Spartans a 19-16 lead, but the Judges tied the score at 19 and 21. Case Western Reserve held a 25-24 lead with 4:25 left in the half and started a 13-3 run to take a 38-27 lead into the break. Mitchell scored six of the team's points during the run with Plachta adding three, and Characklis and Micallef contributing two points each.

The Judges cut the deficit to eight points early in the third quarter, but an 8-2 Spartan run capped by a three-pointer from Plachta put the visitors ahead by 14, 48-34. Brandeis scored the next five points to cut its deficit to nine, however, Characklis responded with a layup on the next possession to give Case Western Reserve a double-digit advantage midway through the quarter. With the lead cut to eight, a Terry jumper ignited a 10-3 Spartan run to give the visitors their largest advantage of the afternoon, 60-45. The Judges scored the final three points of the frame to make the score 60-48 heading into the last quarter.

The Judges started the fourth quarter with a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits. Hartjes ended the run with a layup and Micallef followed with a three-pointer to increase the lead to 14. A 9-2 run brought Brandeis within seven with 22 seconds left, but the Judges could not cut the deficit any further for the rest of the contest leading to a Case Western Reserve victory.

CWRU shot 43.8% from the field and 31.8% from beyond the arc, and limited Brandeis to just 33.3% shooting overall and 28.1% from three-point range. The Spartans finished the game with advantages in both rebounds (42-40) and points in the paint (28-20).

Case Western Reserve will return home for the final three games of the regular season, starting with a matchup against the 19th-ranked Emory Eagles on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. CWRU will host Emory and Rochester for Throwback Weekend, with the Spartans and Yellowjackets facing off on Sunday at 2 p.m. to conclude the annual celebration of the university's athletic history.
