Box Score
The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered its third-straight loss on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 96-75 contest to Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
CWRU fell to 3-3 with the setback while Kalamazoo improved to 4-1.
Senior forward Umar Rashid and senior guard Sam Trunley each scored a team-high 22 points in the loss. Rashid finished the game shooting six-of-12 overall, with all six of his makes from the floor coming from long range on 10 attempts. He added 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. Trunley converted eight-of-16 shots from the floor, including three-of-eight from long range, and added four rebounds and three assists.
The Spartans never led in the game, falling into an early hole after a 10-0 run by the Hornets put CWRU behind 13-3 less than four minutes into the game. Kalamazoo built its lead to 17 points, taking a 27-10 advantage with just over 10 minutes left in the first half. A three by Rashid with 8:35 left in the half got CWRU back within 11, 29-18, but the Hornets expanded their lead back to as many as 17 points over the rest of the half and closed out the frame with a 47-31 lead over the Spartans.
Trunley led all Spartans with 13 points in the first half, while Rashid connected on three-of-six three-point attempts for nine points and added seven rebounds.
Kalamazoo increased its lead to 18 points, 59-41, with 15:00 to play in the game, but the Spartans slowly eroded the Hornets' lead, getting it back to single digits after a three by Rashid with 10:11 remaining. A three by graduate student forward Andy Barba with 7:10 left made it an eight-point contest, 72-64, but that would be as close as the Spartans could get for the remainder of the game as the Hornets pulled away late for the win.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, returning home to host the College of Wooster at 3:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
