The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans fell to 5-5-5 on the season and 0-3-3 in University Athletic Association play with one game left on the schedule. The Judges improved to 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-0 in the UAA.
Senior Kysen Kroeger scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 27th minute to open the scoring. Senior Brandon Kim sent a short pass to senior Lukas Dalakis at the top of the box. Dalakis then flicked the ball to Kroeger in the middle of the box, and the senior sent a one-touch shot into the top left corner of the goal for the score. Both Kim and Dalakis earned assists on the play, the first of the season for Kim and team-high fourth of the year for Dalakis.
The Judges evened the score just seven minutes later on a header goal by Nico Beninda.
The teams battled in the second half, but both goalkeepers were able to keep the score even over the first 38 minutes of play. Brandeis finally broke through when a saved shot found the feet of Maddox Yu, who scored his third goal of the season in the 84th minute.
A shot in the final five minutes by the Spartans was saved, and CWRU was unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.
Overall, Brandeis held an 18-10 edge in shots with an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Bradley Winter saved a career-high nine shots in front of the net for the Spartans. Offensively, Kroeger led the squad with four shots (three on target), and both sophomores Cameron Thayer and Adam Pluszczyk had two shots.
CWRU will end its season by hosting Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, November 9 at 3:30 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will celebrate its graduating players as part of Senior Day.
