In a contest that featured three goals in the final eight and a half minutes, the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team tied Carnegie Mellon University 2-2 on Saturday evening at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans finished the season with a record of 5-5-6 and a mark of 0-3-4 in University Athletic Association play. The Tartans ended the year with a record of 8-4-5 and a record of 2-2-3 in the UAA. CWRU tied for seventh in the conference standings, while CMU tied for fourth.
After a scoreless first 77 minutes, the Tartans finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, scoring on a goal by Robert Lloyd from distance.
Just four minutes later, the Spartans responded with the fourth goal of the season from first-year Amir Awais. Awais headed a corner kick from sophomore David Pineda past the Tartan goalkeeper for the equalizer. Pineda earned his second assist of the season on the play.
The Tartans committed a heartbreaking error with 52 seconds left in the contest to lead to a CWRU goal. Looking to take the lead following a set piece, a CMU defender was dispossessed at the top of the box. The ball was sent to senior Lukas Dalakis in the midfield, who only had the Carnegie Mellon goalkeeper to beat. At the top of the box, Dalakis sent a pass to sophomore Adam Pluszczyk, who calmly sent a left-footed strike into an empty net to give the Spartans the lead with 40 seconds remaining. Pluszczyk recorded his third goal of the season, while Dalakis had his team-leading fifth assist in 2024.
However, the Tartans were able to find an equalizer with just two seconds left on the clock to pull out a draw in the final game of the season.
Overall, CWRU held an 11-9 advantage in shots with the teams even at five shots on goal each. Pluszczyk led the Spartans with three attempts (two on goal), and Pineda and Dalakis each recorded a pair of shots.
