Spartans Fall to #19 Washington & Jefferson 34-21

Case Western Reserve University senior quarterback Alex Fromberg threw for a career-high 421 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, including nine passes for 211 yards to junior wide receiver Dylan Cave, both career highs, but it was not enough for the Spartans who fell 34-21 to 19th-ranked Washington and Jefferson at DiSanto Field on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Spartans to 6-2 both overall and in the PAC, and puts the team on the brink of elimination for the conference title. CWRU will now need to win its final two games over 13th-ranked Grove City and 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon and hope Washington and Jefferson, which improved to 8-1 overall and in the PAC following Saturday's victory, falls to Allegheny in its regular season finale on November 16 to have any chance at a league title.

Fromberg completed 25-of-43 pass attempts in the game, throwing for two scores and rushing for a third, but threw three costly interceptions in the loss. Cave's career day was supplemented by a seven-catch, 90-yard receiving day from senior wide receiver Noah Coyne and a career-best seven-catch, 90-yard day with a touchdown for sophomore wide receiver Beau Wolf.

CWRU senior cornerback Dominic Sais led the team with a career-high 14 tackles (12 solo) and a pass breakup, while graduate student defensive end AJ Dudowksi added 12 tackles (four solo).

The Presidents took the early lead in the game, capping off their opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run to go ahead 7-0 with 10:18 to play in the first quarter, but the Spartans responded immediately, going 79 yards in eight plays to knot the score. Faced with a fourth and seven from the Presidents' 32-yard line, Fromberg completed a pass over the middle to Wolf at the five-yard line, and he was able to take the ball into the endzone to know the score at 7-7 with 6:42 on the clock.

The score remained tied until the end of the first half when Washington & Jefferson was able to take control of the game with two late touchdowns. The Presidents took a 14-7 lead on an 11-yard touchdown catch by Zach Cernuto with 3:53 left that capped off an 86-yard drive. CWRU appeared poised to answer back on its ensuing drive, reaching the Presidents' 27-yard line with 1:43 left, but an interception cost the Spartans possession and Washington & Jefferson went 68 yards in just 53 seconds to add a touchdown and extend their lead to 21-7 heading into halftime.

Fromberg drove the Spartans down the field on their first drive of the second half, completing passes of 35 yards and 29 yards to Cave and scoring on a one-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14 with 11:20 left in the third. However, Washington & Jefferson scored on its next drive to push the lead to 13 and put the game out of reach with another touchdown with 3:29 left in the game to go ahead 34-14.

CWRU kept its slim hope for a victory alive on its next drive as Fromberg was able to convert a fourth and 19 with 1:45 left in the game with a 20-yard pass to junior wide receiver Alec Angello and eventually found Coyne with a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the Washington & Jefferson lead to 34-21. The Spartans went on to recover an onside kick with 23 seconds left, but Fromberg's third interception of the contest allowed the Presidents to kneel on the ball and run out the clock for the win.

The Spartans will be on the road for the final time this regular season when the team travels to Grove City, Pennsylvania for a 1:00 p.m. game against the 13th-ranked Grove City College Wolverines.
