Case Western Reserve University senior Sam Trunley was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for Men's Basketball after his record-setting performance for the Spartans last weekend.
Trunley was named Most Valuable Player of the Bill Sudeck Tournament after averaging an astounding 34.0 points over the team's two games last weekend, including a program-record 45-point output in the championship contest. Trunley finished the weekend shooting 64.5% overall (20-31), 53.8% from three-point range (7-13), and 95.5% (21-22) from the free-throw line. He also added 10.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game over the tournament. In a 99-72 win over Penn State Altoona on Friday, he made eight-of-11 shots overall and four-of-six from long range with seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Trunley followed that up on Saturday by setting the school's single-game scoring record against SUNY Brockport, making 12-of-20 shots in the game, including three-of-seven from behind the three-point arc, and hitting a school-record 18 free throws on 19 attempts. He also collected a career-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Trunley's 45-point output was the most by a Division III player this season and the second-most among NCAA players across all three Divisions. This was the third time in his career that he has been named the UAA Athlete of the Week.
This is the third straight season that the Spartans have opened 2-0 and claimed the Bill Sudeck Tournament Championship. CWRU will be back in action this week, ending a three-game home stand to start the year against La Roche University at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
