Kroeger’s Sixth Goal of Season Earns Men’s Soccer 1-1 Draw with NYU

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team tied New York University 1-1 in the team's University Athletic Association opener on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

The Spartans moved to 5-2-3 on the season, while the Violets' record changed to 5-1-3. Both teams moved to 0-0-1 in UAA play.

NYU scored early in the contest when Johannes Wolfram headed in a free kick from Ahmed Ibrahim in the seventh minute. Neither team could find the back of the net for the rest of the first half with play contained in the midfield for most of the first 45 minutes.

CWRU started the second half with an aggressive offensive style of play, pushing the Violet back line to its breaking point. Just six minutes into the period, the Spartans had their equalizer. Sophomore David Pineda sent a ball into the box from the near side, in between the edge of the box and the sideline. The cross found the head of senior Kysen Kroeger, who sent the ball into the lower left corner of the goal for the score. It was the team-leading sixth goal of the season for Kroeger and the 12th of his career.

Over the next 15 minutes, Case Western Reserve kept up the pressure on offense, but the team was denied twice by NYU goalkeeper Jackson McCloskey, twice by the woodwork, and once by a Violet defender standing on the goal line. The hosts held the visitors to just one shot for the remainder of the game to maintain the even scoreline.

CWRU had 11 shots in the contest, with nine coming in the second half, compared to just six for NYU. The Violets put just one shot on goal while the Spartans had five shots that required saves. Kroeger was the lone Case Western Reserve player with multiple attempts, taking four chances at the goal in 80 minutes of time on the field.

The Spartans will next travel to Atlanta for a matchup against Emory University on Sunday, October 13.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU moved to 10-15-3 against NYU since 1994, remaining unbeaten in the series over the last three seasons
  • Pineda earned his first career assist on the goal
  • Junior Bradley Winter was credited with the tie, moving his record to 3-1-3 this season. His seven career ties in front of the net are one shy of matching the program record
