The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University volleyball team swept a pair of matches at the third University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon, defeating the host Tartans in five sets and the 15th-ranked University of Chicago Maroons in three sets.
The Spartans earned their 20th win of the season, improving to 20-4 overall. CWRU finished the UAA regular season with a record of 5-2, placing second in the conference. The Tartans dropped to 13-10 overall and 4-3 in the UAA, placing fourth in final standings. The Maroons fell to 20-7 overall and 3-4 in the UAA, tying for fifth in the association.
#17 CWRU 2, Carnegie Mellon 2 (25-17, 23-25, 14-25, 29-27, 18-16)
After the teams evenly split the first 12 points, CMU won the next four to take a 10-6 lead. Following a CWRU timeout, the Spartans captured the next six points to take their first lead of the set, 12-10. The final three points of the run came on service aces by junior Emily Goodpaster. Carnegie Mellon responded, tying the score at 13. However, Case Western Reserve won the following five rallies to take a five-point advantage, its largest of the set to that point. The hosts cut their deficit to four, 20-16, but CWRU won five of the final six rallies to take the first set 25-17.
Looking to even the match score, Carnegie Mellon won six of the first eight points in the second set. CWRU was able to tie the score at 14 on a kill by senior Carly Scott. After a kill by senior Rea Marfatia put the Spartans ahead, CMU re-tied the score at 15. The Spartans followed by winning three of the next four points (two on kills by Marfatia and one on a kill by junior Kiya Levy) to take a two-point lead. With the score at 20-18 following a block by juniors Amanda Ngo and Kalli Wall, the Tartans took a timeout. Scott increased the team's lead to three with a kill, but Carnegie Mellon prevailed in the next two rallies to make the score 21-20 and prompt a CWRU timeout. Following the break, senior Chloe Maciejewski put down an attack to keep the Spartans ahead, and Marfatia followed with a kill to push the advantage to three. After the final CMU timeout, the Tartans captured the next five points to win the second set, 25-23.
To start the pivotal third set, Carnegie Mellon pulled out to an 8-3 lead. After two kills by Maciejewski, the Tartans extended their lead to six with a 4-1 run. CWRU could only cut its deficit to five for the remainder of the period as the Tartans won the set 25-14.
The score of the fourth set was tied 10 times in the first 22 points. With it even at 11, CMU used a 3-0 run to take the lead. CWRU tied the score at 15, 16, 18, and 19 before the Tartans took a 21-19 advantage with back-to-back kills. CMU led 23-20, but four consecutive Spartan points had the visitors serving for set point. An attacking error evened the score but a kill by Marfatia put CWRU ahead again. The Tartans won the next two points to serve for the match, but Marfatia evened the score at 26 with a kill. A service error gave Carnegie Mellon its second opportunity to end the match. On the next rally, Marfatia put down her 13th kill of the match to keep Case Western Reserve alive. With the senior serving for the Spartans, the CWRU block forced two CMU attacking errors to force a decisive fifth set.
The teams traded the first six points of the final set before two Spartan kills and a block put CWRU up three. The Tartans interrupted the run, but back-to-back kills by Maciejewski pushed the Spartan lead to four. After the teams switched sides of the court, CMU won the next four rallies, tying the score at eight. The Spartans responded by taking four of the next five points to lead 12-9. After a kill by Wall, Case Western Reserve served for match point twice, but CMU scored both times. The Tartans then won the 29th point of the set to serve for the match at 15-14. Kills by Wall and Maciejewski kept CWRU alive, and a Spartan service error tied the score at 16. Wall and senior Lily Crouch blocked an attack for the 17th Spartan point of the set, and Maciejewski put down her 14th successful attack to secure the 18-16 victory for Case Western Reserve.
Maciejewski matched a career-high with 14 kills in the match. Marfatia led the team with 16 kills and added 15 digs. Scott earned a rare triple-double, recording 12 kills, 24 assists, and 15 digs. First-year Sophia Datto led the team with 20 digs, and first-year Avery Basinger had a team-high 31 assists to go along with 11 digs.
#17 CWRU 3, #15 Chicago 0 (25-18, 25-23, 31-29)
CWRU started the match on a 6-2 run and extended its lead to seven (12-5) on a kill by Ngo. An 8-4 run cut the Chicago deficit to three, but the Spartans responded by winning four of the next five rallies. Three consecutive Maroon points again made the difference three points. However, a service error made the score 21-17, and Case Western Reserve won four of the final five points to claim the first set by seven.
Chicago won 12 of the first 15 points of the second set, leading by nine early in the period. A Levy kill ended the Chicago run and ignited a CWRU push. On the service of senior Maria Tuepker, the Spartans won the next 10 points to take a 13-12 lead. The teams traded the next eight points before a service ace by Scott increased the advantage to two. A later kill by Maciejewski made the score 20-17. Chicago cut its deficit to one three times over the following points but kills by Ngo and Marfatia had the Spartans serving for the set at 24-21. The Maroons kept the set alive with back-to-back points before Scott ended it with a kill of her own.
The teams traded small runs early in the third set before CWRU established a 14-10 lead with a 5-0 run. A Chicago kill tied the score at 15, but the Maroons could not retake the lead after three Spartan points in a row. Levy later made the score 22-19 with a kill before Chicago won the following three points. Maciejewski put the Spartans ahead with a kill, but the Maroons countered with back-to-back points to serve for the set. Maciejewski would not let that happen, burying a kill to tie the score at 24. A solo block by Ngo gave the Spartans an opportunity to clinch the match, but the Maroons fought off the point. A Ngo kill put Case Western Reserve at the service line with a 26-25 advantage. Chicago followed with a kill and a service ace to make the score 27-26. A service error tied the score at 27 and the Maroons would not lead for the rest of the match. Chicago fought off two more match points before an attacking error gave the Spartans a 31-29 set victory and a sweep of the match.
Marfatia and Ngo both had a team-high 10 kills with the senior adding seven digs and four blocks and the junior adding seven blocks. Ngo had just one attacking error in the match for a .500 hitting percentage. Levy recorded nine kills, and four blocks and Wall contributed four blocks. Datto paced the squad with 21 digs, and Scott and Basinger each assisted on 16 kills.
With regular season conference play complete, the Spartans will next head to Grove City, Pennsylvania, for a tri-match against Westminster College and host Grove City College on Saturday, November 2. CWRU is scheduled to face the Titans at 1 p.m. and Wolverines at 3 p.m.
