For the second time this season, first-year Amir Awais scored in the final minutes to help the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team earn a tie on the road. On Sunday afternoon, a late goal by Awais earned the Spartans a 1-1 draw with Washington University in St. Louis at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.
CWRU moved to 5-4-5 on the season and 0-2-3 in University Athletic Association play with the draw, while the Bears stood at 7-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the conference standings after the contest.
After WashU scored its lone goal in the 78th minute, Awais found the late equalizer in the 87th minute with an assist from senior Brandon Kim. Kim sent the ball out to Awais at the top of the box, and the first-year forward directed a shot into the top right corner of the net for the score. It was his third goal of the season with Kim earning his first assist in 2024.
The Spartans were unable to convert a corner kick in the final minute, so the game ended with the score even at one.
WashU controlled possession in the opening scoreless stanza, holding a 7-1 advantage in shots, though none were on target. Case Western Reserve's lone shot of the period was taken by graduate student Eshwar Challa in the 17th minute off a corner kick. Challa's attempt was on frame but saved by the Bears goalkeeper.
The Spartans were more productive in the second half, firing four shots in the first 20 minutes of play and not allowing an attempt by the hosts. CWRU totaled six shots in the contest with three on goal, while WashU had eight shots with one on goal. The six Spartan attempts were by six different players.
CWRU will end the season with two home contests over the next two weeks, starting with a matchup against Brandeis Sunday, November 3 at 1:30 p.m.
